Mrgreen419
I have an 81 datsun 720 that i recently repaced the alternator on, but it still wont charge my battery, so i went and got an ignition voltage regulator for it but i can't find where it goes, and the guy at my local part store is kinda useless on the subject of these little trucks so i was hoping someone else has had to repace one of these and could point me in the right direction 1 Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
The alternator has a built in voltage regulator so take it back for your money. All Nissans after '77 had this type of alternator. Many alternators today are crap in a box with high failure rate and free replacement. The original was about $300 so this is what you get for $60. Try another. 1 Quote Link to comment

datzenmike
What's an 'ignition voltage regulator'? Maybe I call it something else? 1 Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
Like to know more. How about change the fuses. If alternator is good then in vehicle its not getting power to the windings to excite the coil or something of that nature. Only other volt reg would be the instrument panel 1 Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Does the red charge light work when the ignition switch is turned to ON???? If bulb burned out you won't have charge. Current through the bulb is what causes a slight magnetic field in the alternator to get it started. If you rev the engine it might start working from residual magnetism but this is not a fix. 1 Quote Link to comment
Chopper Jim
Had a few alternators test good on the parts house test equipment, but were junk on the vehicle. It happens. Have them replace it. Chopper Jim 1 Quote Link to comment
