OldB
I have a 1975 B210 4 speed stick shift that runs great! But lately I’ve been having a little trouble with the clutch. Sometimes shifting is a little clunky. Oddly, this problem diminishes when the car warms up! I’ve tested the clutch by starting from a standstill on a slight incline in third gear and it passed that test. What could be causing this? I do have to depress the pedal almost to the floor but it doesn’t feel spongy. The clutch fluid is at the right level. Any ideas? Thanks! Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Push on the pedal with your thumb. There should be about 1/16" of movement (like looseness or play) before it becomes firm. Does it? If ok... The clutch master cylinder may be full, but air may still have gotten in if it was ever low and needed topping up. The procedure is to pump the pedal several times and hold down while loosening the bleeder on the slave to let any trapped air out. Close the bleeder and only then let the pedal up. Repeat until no air comes out and only clear hydraulic fluid. Tighten the bleeder and you're done. At all times the master must be full and not allowed to run dry. 2 Quote Link to comment
Doctor510
What he said. BLEED it anyway. Quote Link to comment
OldB
Thanks, for your replies, DatzenMike and Doctor510. If the bleeding routine fails, could it be that the clutch needs replacing? If so, will my heaven-sent repair shop mechanic be able to find a replacement through his normal channels or would I have to put him in touch with a Datsun parts specialist and, if so, which one? Thanks again! Quote Link to comment
Draker
should be able to find a replacement on Rockauto.com I'd guess. I haven't looked for myself.. but thats where I would start.. From what you explained... It's likely just need bleeding.. or new slave or master. Again.. same place for parts. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Hmmm.... the slave cylinder has an adjustable push rod to adjust away normal clutch wear. Possibly has too much play on that end and needs adjusting. If so this would raise the engagement point away from the floor. Quote Link to comment
