Cardinal Grammeter
Looking to purchase junkyard 5-spd for my 74 L18 620. Looks like there is no inspection plate for visual inspection. I think once, a long time ago, I once did a crude synchro test by spinning clutch on input shaft by hand w/trans in neutral and then jam into gear. If the synchro was broken, it would grind. Worn is another matter. Other than that, I got nothin' Also, where would you buy synchros to freshen up? Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Nothing you can do but drive it and see. Drain the oil and look at it and the drain bung. Oil should look like it was just put in new. Should not be black or silver or have silver (aluminum flakes) in it or any ball bearings or parts of the race. I've seen all this before. The drain bung has a magnet that collects ferrous metal. A fine black paste is normal, chunks are not. Quote Link to comment
Stoffregen Motorsports
There is a test to see if the synchros are in good shape, but it comes with experience. Lean into the gears, gently, without making the complete shift. While doing that, spin the input shaft and see if the synchro is grabbing and slowing down the gears. The trans needs to be out for this test. 1 Quote Link to comment
Cardinal Grammeter
Good point about checking the fluid. I've rebuild enough trans to know what you mean - you can simply feel them if you simulate their operation by hand. Thanks NOTE: ON the other hand, looks like a bearing and ring kit is $78 for this trans - might be inclined to simply rebuild it for that price. http://www.americanpowertrainwarehouse.com/fs5w71a-fs5w71c-transmission-rebuild-kit-with-synchro-rings-fits-77-84-datsun-nissan-200sx-280z-280zx-maxima-pickup-bk104ws/ 1 Quote Link to comment
