City Hunter
First time I have ever even seen one of these as the inline 4 l's I've worked on never had them. Some weird guide that sits on top of the valve under the rocker that keeps the rocker in place. Anyhow, been messing with my fuel delivery issue and it apparently just popped out. wasnt even revving it much, it was barely idling. I thought it was kinda weird. Seems like the only way it could really pop out is from valve float, or a really out of whack rocker? Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Too much clearance will do it too. I've seen them in the bottom of oil pans. :D Quote Link to comment
City Hunter
I'll have to go through the valve train but its quite quiet now than I managed to knock the thing back in. It was quite interesting listening to my engine all of a sudden start knocking. I was like no way this is rod knock listening around the engin. turned it off and pulled the valve cover, and the first rocker I wiggled happened to be the one, and im like that aint right lol. datsunaholic
I've had one pop off an L20B... too much valve lash, fixed by adjusting properly and never had the problem again. It can also happen when a valve spring breaks or a valve gets bent and/or hangs, but that would have pretty drastic symptoms. Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
I had one pop off on the intake rocker. felt like one cylinder was down. Had spark at all 4 cly so I popped the cover to notice a lash pad lying on the botton in the head. Installed and adjusted valve lash, Sometimes if people install after market cams w/bigger lashpads on stock valve retainers it can stick up higher above the retainer and could fall out Quote Link to comment
datsunfish
severely worn rocker surface can do it too. If its worn to the point that the rocker is pitched at such an angle to get proper lash the retainer will fall off with no tension. Quote Link to comment
