Gradyfest
Twenty nine inches diameter max. with little to no rubbing on the front. Nope, mine are 31" and never rub. They are only 7" wide though! Bahahahahaa! Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
A conservative width helps. Quote Link to comment
84720FourWheel
I usually don't use 4x4 in the winter. I leave the hubs locked though. I like to use it down hills as abs. Where'd you get 31x7s? I've never seen them any less than 10.5 wide. Minnesota? Very few 720s around. I've seen 2 other 720s in person. Are you in southern MN? Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
235/75R15 are 6.95" wide and 28.88" tall Quote Link to comment
720driver97
I'm form Hutchinson mn , I got 31s on now with wide rims with a big offset Quote Link to comment
Gradyfest
Mine are Yokohama 742S 7.00R15. I rock factory steel rims that are only 5.5 inches wide. These tires are the closest match to what came on our trucks. No rubs, and the speedometer is right on. 1 Quote Link to comment

Huntin720
235/75R15 are 6.95" wide and 28.88" tall Do you mean 6.95" sidewall? 235/75R15 should be 9.25" wide. Quote Link to comment
Gradyfest
Do you mean 6.95" sidewall? 235/75R15 should be 9.25" wide. I thought the same. 1 Quote Link to comment
720driver97
What would I need to run 33" or 35" tires? Quote Link to comment
84720FourWheel
A body lift, a suspension lift and probably some trimming. Quote Link to comment
720driver97
Is a solid axle worth it? Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
If severe lifting is what you are after, then yes. 1 Quote Link to comment
720driver97
How bad is the ifs for offroading? Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Handles very well and good articulation within the limit imposed on it by how high you can go. 1 Quote Link to comment
720driver97
OK my truck doesn't have reverse what's a good rebuild kit for the transmission? And how hard is it to rebuild a transmission? Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
OK my truck doesn't have reverse What does this mean? Fifth and reverse are on the same shift fork so... is fifth working ok? The 720 has a reverse check sleeve that prevents a shift directly from 5th down into reverse. Does the shifter go 'into' reverse? Or jammed? Quote Link to comment
720driver97
5 seems fine but when I try reverse the lever gos all the way back but it feels like there is nothing there Quote Link to comment
84720FourWheel
Perhaps the retaining ball popped out? Does the gear work if you hold it in? Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Well the 'good' news is the reverse is in the tail section so the entire transmission does not need to be broken down. It will have to come out though. Quote Link to comment
Lockleaf
With regard to the lift, SAS has been covered really well in a few threads on here. Poormans720 was a good one if I remember correctly. 31s fit without rubbing with a suspension lift. They call it a 3 inch but that is an optimistic statement. It is more like 2.5 inches at best. With a body lift on top of that you can run 33s, but you usually need to trim the bottoms of the fenders wider as well. Going any higher or bigger requires SAS or fabbing up a lift kit like you can find for a chevy truck IFS. These are general rules and like any other rule, you can find exceptions. Tire width, rim size and offset, willingness to run major positive camber, etc will all allow some exceptions to those rules. If you decide to pull your transmission, pull the engine and transmission out together from the top. This is faster and easier than pulling the trans out from underneath. I realize that this may seem counterintuitive, but to get just the trans out, you will have to completely disassemble the front suspension/diff section. I've done multiple clutches and a couple trans swaps on these 720s. I've only done one out the bottom. Never again. 1 Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Your '83 will likely have C-200 and 4.11 gears. Not at all good for off-road but... The early 4X4 Toyota was 4.10 so this would be close enough mach to the rear axle ratio. Stock tires are P215/75R15 or about 27.75" tall. Going to even 31" would be the same as changing the differential from 4.11 down to 3.6... even worse!!!!! To keep the same crawl speed and acceleration performance you would need to change both the differentials to 4.625s 1 Quote Link to comment
