Buy parts, insert them. Cost depends on place of purchase, mainly if brakes are bought as a kit or sourced from pnp. You run risk of flaming with this kind of question, especially if you don't even have the car yet. You may want to take a look at the dime quarterly back issues, most of your 510 questions will be answered before being asked.

Ok thanks Dolomite. What does flaming mean though? sorry brand new to all this but I've looked at a few and it's been narrowed down to three cars, should be making my choice very shortly.

Flaming means you are about to get burned.

What you are asking are questions that have been asked time after time. Search. Lots of info here and all over the rest of the internet.

Hell. Using Google to search will lead you to either the Realm or right back here.

You look noob. Don't be one.

Cheaper to find a dime with a 5 speed swap already. Always try to find the most complete car you can afford. A $1000 car is $5000 to fix up plus finding all the parts and pieces can take years.

Research, research, research. Know what you want in a dime and what to look for. Know everything about it. There are at least 4 factory 5 speeds that will fit the engine in the 510. (more if you include factory racing parts) All have advantages and disadvantages. If you drive primarily in town it's not really worth having a 5 speed. It's meant to lower highway cruise RPMs to gain a slight mileage increase and some are not the best gear ratios for a small L16 engine.

It's only a couple bolts.

Short tail 5 speed is pretty much a direct bolt in. Long tail Z 5 speed requires a new trans x-member and a shortened driveshaft. If it's coming off a four cylinder, it needs to be from an L series engine. Z engine 5 speeds won't work on an L series.
