1Low620
While encountering an issue with my brake shoes and drums , I noticed the adjusters were frozen. I took them off, cleaned them up, cleaned the backing plate so they could slide about in the track but I don't think they are doing their job. As I took them apart, I don't quite understand how it is they function unless I'm looking at the glass half full. Here is the complete unit. and it taken apart and The ratcheting gears were gummed up and sticking, so I cleaned and lubed them and installed them back onto the backing plates. When I try to adjust the drag, nothing happens? How is the screw that threads into the gear go in and out if the whole unit just spins inside the body? or is that how they work? I had to manually move the shoes out of the way and use a flat tip to adjust the screw but I have not been able to fine tune them. Quote Link to comment
laotsu
the daisy looking bit has a screw in the end, it's frozen in. you have to break it lose. Quote Link to comment
laotsu
the part on the far left in the middle picture, that slotted piece is separate and screws in and out Quote Link to comment
1Low620
the part on the far left in the middle picture, that slotted piece is separate and screws in and out Yeah I broke those free and they thread in and out nicely, what happens when I put them back in is I can sit there and spin the daisy all day long but I get no movement out of them. The whole piece just spins in the body unless I manually move the screw itself in and out. Quote Link to comment
laotsu
it has to be sandwiched between the brake shoes, then the shoes prevent the slotted parts from spinning and the adjuster expands. Quote Link to comment
DanielC
Do not forget one side is left hand threaded. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Normal grease is not to be used on brake parts. Hopefully you used a lithium based grease. Quote Link to comment
1Low620
Got out there early this morning, the clicking I heard is not the adjuster trying to adjust, the tension spring thing broke and was shifting around  . Think I'll just play it safe and order some new ones off Rockauto. Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
the adjuster takes up the slack when the brakes wear. You need to manual adjust these every so often. Once you tell the brakes take further movment in the pedal then adjust. Newer cars do this automatic. What I do is cheat and before I put the drum on I adjust much as slop out as possible so i dont spend all day trying to turn that wheel the right way Quote Link to comment
