Eriks
A quick question: When putting a 5 speed in a 510 goon can you use the original 510 shifter handle and shifter hole ? Thanks. Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
Yes, if you get one the correct length. Two of the seven different 5-speeds are the same length as the 510 4-speed All the shifter knobs are the same threads. Quote Link to comment

Eriks
Thanks. I would also like to ask what 5 speed is the most desireable for a 510 ? Quote Link to comment
datsunaholic
If by "shifter handle" you mean the actual shift lever (the metal part, not the knob) then no, the 4-speed shifter is different than all but rare early 5-speeds. You'd need the shift lever that matches the transmission. "Desirable" is a matter of opinion and depends on what you want the trans to do. The S10 200SX (through '79) 63-series "dogleg" 5-speed is the only one that's the same length (in stock form) that won't require moving the shift lever back (and making the floor opening bigger, shortening the driveshaft, etc) but it's a weaker trans (about the same strength as the stock 4-speed). No matter what, a custom transmission mount must be made, as no 5-speeds are a straight bolt in to a 510. The 71-series 5-speeds are stronger, but longer. There was a short-tail 71B trans, but it won't have the right front case. You'd have to do some parts mixing to make a short-tail L-series 71B trans. Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
For performance the rare Datsun Competition is most desirable because its non-overdrive - all gears are for acceleration. Quote Link to comment

cj8281
You need this one. Has a funny shift pattern but it worked really good. I think I still have the crossmember for it. It did have wood blocks for spacers were it mounted to the body though. I never had any issues with it loosening. This one came out of my '71 510 4 door. Don't know how I could get it to you though as you are in Norway. Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
Norway? Look for these 5-speeds 1977-1978 A10 Stanza L16/L20B 1979-1984 910 Bluebird L20B Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Norway got long doglegs in the 910 SSS option. Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
Are you thinking of UK? EUROPE got L16 & L18 910s. S110 EUROPE with L18 used FS5W63A gearbox, long one i think. Same length as our S110 Z-series gearbox (71B). Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
The L18 twin SU 910. It's slightly shorter than our 810/Maxima. I think it was called an SSS option? Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
In the UK they had L20B SSS I believe Quote Link to comment
Eriks
I have a 910 sedan, and it does have a long 5 speed transmission. As far as I know the L20B was not an option in the UK. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Never heard of an SSS L20B... not that there isn't one, just that if there is, I wish I had one. Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
I see you are correct about the UK the 180B is a 1.8 version of the 200B and a UK model. here we also got teh 160B and the 180B SSS, but no G810 models or the 200B's L20B SSS came is Australia, reportedly. Aussie 810/200B SSS coupe. Quote Link to comment
