reese
I have a 69 510 wagon and I have the front end apart to rebuild and lower. I have run into a problem. The steering arm that fits between the strut housing and lower control arm uses the 11mm thread ball joint. I have been back and forth looking for these, rockauto lists them but I got some locally to make sure they were correct. Well, they had the 11mm thread but the taper is the larger 14mm size. Is this size on 69 only? Did datsun change the steering arm on the 70 cars? Is the 68 the same as 69? Is one of the arms better? Thanks for any input. Quote Link to comment
Tristin
Yes, after 69 they all became 14mm. The 14s are better and can be used with the 69 arms. Quote Link to comment
Ratwagon1600
What he said ^^^^^^^^^ and, if my memory serves me correctly, the 180B (610) arms will fit the 510 strut and have the 14 mm hole Quote Link to comment

reese
Later, 70+ 510 steering arms. Quote Link to comment

reese
Replace the steering arms with the later 14mm style then use a new 14mm ball joints. Quote Link to comment
reese
The plan now is to get the proper tapered reamer and open up the holes on my steering arms. I believe the tie rod ends are larger as well as the ball joints on the later car and this would require me to replace all of the all tie rods and steering linkage on my car. Not quite ready for all that... Can anyone confirm the larger size tie rod ends as well on later cars? Quote Link to comment
reese
The taper on these is 7 degrees if anyone ever needs to do this. This is the tool. http://www.speedwaymotors.com/Speedway-Tapered-Ball-Joint-Reamer-7-Degree,2918.html Quote Link to comment
rundwark
Sorry to resurrect an ancient thread, but I'm faced with the same problem. Have 11mm steering arms, need to fit them on 14mm ball joints and can't find a used set for the 14mm ball joints. Reese, did you follow through with reaming the tapered holes and did it work? TIA! Wooger
If you want to keep your 11mm steering arms, i think Autozone has lower ball joints that may fit. Part number is FA2026. The website is a little weird, if you designate your vehicle as a 1969 model, the description won't indicate that its 11mm. But if you designate your vehicle as 1973 for example, the description notes that this part is 11mm. Part # FA1044 is the 14mm version. I haven't tried them yet so I'm not positive if they work, but it is on the list of things to try. Sorry to resurrect an ancient thread, but I'm faced with the same problem. Abe Froman
I know a guy that has some 11 mm ball joints if you are interested, I think he has 3 of them that he would sell. Quote Link to comment
Wooger
In case anyone was wondering, the “11mm” Duralast lower ball joints from Autozone do not fit the 69 steering arms. Although the threads fit through the hole, the shoulder is too big. Back they go. Ordered 11mm ball joints from dapsupply. Hopefully they fit. Quote Link to comment
Wooger
Just wanted to tie out my little ball joint tangent. The 11mm ball joints ordered from dapsupply.net fit like a charm. They're also manufactured by 555 to boot. I'm learning quickly to say "no" to autozone parts whenever possible. Quote Link to comment
