mrbigtanker
So that tranny is diferent then the 280z so not sure were the speedo cable goes in but if its were i think make sure it does not get caught up on the tranny cross member, because it will bind it up and cause it to leak. HeyJoe!
Quick update. I finally got the 5 speed in the 521. Speedo is off by 25% on the high side. Seems like I can cruise at about 75/80 mph no problem. So when the speedo says 100, I'm (really) going 75 at a normal sounding (not to loud) RPM. The dogleg shifting is kinda funky, going from first to second can sometimes be a pain. About 1 out of 10 times I shift from first into fourth instead of second, bushings maybe? Overall the truck is much more freeway ready now, I've been driving it a lot more. Very happy.   I've had this truck for 2 years now and decided it was time to take out the insulation/crap that was glued to the floor when I bought it. I don't know how long this stuff was in there before I got it, but I'm guessing it was quite a while. I didn't expect it to look this bad when I pulled it up.....  vvv Drivers side is much worse than passengers side. I used to park it outside before I moved a bunch of stuff around and started parking it in the garage full time. When it rained I would always find a (small) pool of water on the drivers side floor. I'm planning on pulling the seat out tomorrow and doing a clean up, wire brushing. Then figuring out what the next step is.... Also, I found a couple "snaps" (see pics below), anybody know what the could have been for? They're right by the corner of the seat on both sides, I never saw them till I pulled out the silver stuff. vvv Cheers! 2 Quote Link to comment
mrbigtanker
Joe the snaps are for the factory floor mats that was in your truck. You will have 1 on each side and you will have another pair up under the dash or going up the floor board.Thats odd your tranny is shifting like that . HeyJoe!
Pulled the seat, drain plugs, kick boards (these things can't be that hard to make right?) and package tray. I put in a old drawer and a piece of wood for a seat and drove around the block, it was a scary ride, the drawer kept sliding around, I couldn't tell if the clutch was all the way in or not, I couldn't see out the windows right, I was sitting to low...I won't do that again. On to the pics from today....... I think the jack that was in the truck (not a datsun bottle jack) when I bought it caused some of the rust problems. vvvvv 2 Quote Link to comment
HeyJoe!
Ray, you were right about the snaps. There are 2 more under the dash for the mat... 1 Quote Link to comment

HeyJoe!
I started cleaning up the floor a little yesterday, lots more work to do.... Quote Link to comment
mrbigtanker
Just lay down some POR-15,your floor boards are cherry, surface rust is no problem. Are you getting the inside all re-done. Quote Link to comment
HeyJoe!
I was planning on just pulling up the insulation and putting down some por-15, but the drivers side floor was worse than I thought. So it's turned into a little more involved project. I started grinding some of the rust/gunk off the drivers side floor today, it's pretty slow going. I think the PO used some kind of goop before he put down the insulation. Here's the stuff I bought yesterday, a set of rollers so I can drive my truck while I have my rims powdercoated (someday). An extra 521 dash top (in case I want to go back to a padded 521dash someday) and a extra tranny hump cover, I guess I'm collecting Datsun parts now...? Quote Link to comment

HeyJoe!
Quick update..... Truck was running hot after start up and then cooling down after about 10 minutes on the road. I replaced the thermostat and radiator hoses. It's running at normal temperature now. I drove out to the Valley the other day, no heat issues. It was about 95 degrees. I bought a set of old blue & yellow license plates from Craigslist....I like the blue and yellow better than the "modern" ones. Just duck taped on for a pic... Quote Link to comment
wayno
That's a lot of RTV/sealer on that thermostat, you only need a very thin film, you should hardly be able to see it. Quote Link to comment
mrbigtanker
I can get those plates redone in black or the same blue if you want let me know. Quote Link to comment

Wayne, That's the goop that was on the thermostat housing when I took it off. I scraped it off. When I put it back together I used a gasket/thermostat/hoses from partsgeek.com, worked out pretty good. Here's what it looks like now. vvvvv Quote Link to comment

Ray, Yep, I'd like to get the "new" plates straightened/repainted. I found this place: http://www.finishyourplates.com/ that seems good but expensive, $100 per plate. Who do you use?
