"Stubby" antenna to replace the huge fender-mount antenna?

Anyone done this?  I've got the fenders off, so it'd be a good time to install something that replaces the long chrome whip.  When I go to websites selling stubby antennas there are specific models for specific cars.  There's a hole in the fender that needs to be filled.  I would think that just about any stubby that's broad enuf at the base would work?

Maybe the manufacturer's OEM cable adds complexity.  That's not an issue with this old truck.  I removed the original cable.

Get some bondo and shave that sucker off then go and get one of those "Digital Antennas" from Best Buy. Its a black box looking thing that you can put under the hood, tuck it under the dash or pretty much anywhere. Much better reception too.
