wayno
I didn't look very close till you said something ggzilla, but that frame has been extended close to 3 feet. Quote Link to comment
stillachevyguy
i talked to the chick again today that owned it. she said when she got it that it had an l20b in it and a flat bed (which was 20 years ago). i havent looked to closely at the gauges yet,but my buddy has a 69 with a cherry cluster in it. how can you tell its a 520 instead of a 521? stillachevyguy
it looks to be about 2 and a half feet, about 13 foot front to back total. Quote Link to comment
thisismatt
The front corner markers on the fenders are a good giveaway. That, and the fenders are different (hard to descibe - chunkier looking than 521). Quote Link to comment
Tristin
That, and the fenders are different (hard to descibe - chunkier looking than 521). The visual description would be something like "more rounded." The 520 front fenders and hood are rounded and bloated similar the the 411 front end whereas a 521 front is more square reminiscent of a 510. Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
-------- how can you tell its a 520 instead of a 521? -------- Look under the hood on the aluminum identification plate. It will either say 520 or 521. Quote Link to comment
Laecaon
520s have a high waist line like a 410/411 where the line goes above the headlight area. 521s have a lower waist line like 510s, where the line goes through the headlight area. Quote Link to comment
stillachevyguy
now im curious,my buddy has his roll over 69 that im going to get parts from. is the windshield and back window the same? what about the door glass? Quote Link to comment
wayno
See how this 520 dual headlight like yours drops in the front, the hood and fenders drop down that last foot towards the front. The 521 is more flat, it doesn't drop at all. See how yours drops also in the front, yours has to be a 1967-68, I don't beleave that they had a dual headlight 520 in 1966, and I have never heard of a 1969 520. If you have a title for a 69, and the VIN tag matches the title, then someone switched the VIN tag to get a title for it, as the VIN tag is only screwed on these vehicles. I wonder if they went as far as to change the frame, which is unlikely, so the frame number should match the title also, and that number is located right next to the starter on the top of the frame. BTW, if you want front turn signals for your truck, there is a new set on ebay right now, these are very hard to find, I would snatch them up now, they may or may not be NOS, but you are not going to find them any where else, this guy is the only one I have ever known to have them. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Datsun-520-FRONT-PARK-LAMP-SET-NEW-OLD-STOCK-MADE-IN-JAPAN-/271122474960?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item3f2028a7d0&vxp=mtr Quote Link to comment
stillachevyguy
i havent gotten any papers on it yet,but i was told 3rd party by her bf that it was a 69. i'll get the paperwork in the next week or so. it's been raining since 9:30 here so i havent been to willing to go outside and look at it since i got home. but when i unload it tomorrow im gonna check things out. stillachevyguy
tag says l520. cant read the rest since its almost completely faded off Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
So what the 3rd party said the GF said is incorrect. No wonder hearsay is not allowed in a court of law. 520 was 1965-1968. 521 started May 1968. Quote Link to comment
stillachevyguy
well either way im still happy with the deal i got. even though i would have preffered a 521 Quote Link to comment
wayno
tag says l520. cant read the rest since its almost completely faded off Your fine then, as long as the title is for a 520 also. I prefer the 521 also, the engine compartment has about 2 1/2 inches more room front to back(radiator mount to firewall). There have been a few guys that have switched everything from the firewall forward to make a 66 520 single headlight out of there 521, I suppose you could go the other way, make a 521 out of your 520. I also know a guy that stretched a 521 so he could put a chevy V8 in it, he took two 521 front ends, and made one longer one, with available parts, you could stretch your 520. :) Quote Link to comment
stillachevyguy
im thinkin im just gonna try to keep it simple. fix or swap the front clip over to something else and find a long bed (if the length is right) cause i'd like to drive it a while before going all out on a rebuild. but if the added length is too much for a long bed maybe build a 4 door out of it? havent heard of that yet Quote Link to comment
wayno
Unfortunately :hmm:, but we don't have them here. :) Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
I also know a guy that stretched a 521 so he could put a chevy V8 in it ----------------- What a waste of time. Chevy V8s fit in a stock 521 if you select the right parts, especially if you don't use the long water pump. Quote Link to comment
TENDRIL
its a 520 Quote Link to comment

You likely know/know of the guy that did it, that truck is still around I beleave, and he towed his race car(SRL311) with it, and he did the modification in one weekend, the only reason for the V8, was to tow the race car. stillachevyguy
not interested in a v8 swap at all. aimin for mileage around 20-25 mpg Quote Link to comment

TENDRIL
are you going to use the doors? Quote Link to comment
stillachevyguy
the right side looks nice, but im gonna take off all the bondo on the left side to see what i got. it looks like it was never even sanded down so im really curious. but the good thing about this is that i have nothing but time to finish it. but i'd like it to be sooner the better lol Quote Link to comment
wayno
are you going to use the doors? You had the early doors on your 67, correct? What was the issue, your old door was bad? I posted to that thread, but didn't hear anything, and now have forgotten what thread it was, what exactly you need to fix your issue. Quote Link to comment
TENDRIL
PMed wayno to avoid thread jack  Quote Link to comment
