okay guys she's been running preety good lately but i have a few questions

1. whether or not i should get my radiator replaced or just fixed

it will need to be recored for sure and there is a small pin hole next to the upper hose inlet

2. repair or replace my tranny. (5 speed) it grinds going into second and when i have it in fifth it will pop out of gear when i give it more than half throttle

i've read some threads that say there is a bolt that works its way loose for fifth. would that cause it to fall out of gear

3.considering i want to take this thing on a serious road trip would an oil cooler be a reasonable up grade or just something to throw money at

hopefully you guys can point me in the right direction for getting this thing ready to hit the highway

thanks for the info

hey hey hey

been a long time since I posted

got a new job landscaping/irrigation which has taken damn near all of my time

been busting my ass for 12-16 hrs a day but I'm learning a lot too

been lurking for a while buying a few parts here and there

put an aluminum radiator in it

installed a matchbox

rebuilt the carb

got her some new shoes

installed a gm internally regulated alternator

pulled out the carpet to get ready for some spray on bed liner

she has been my dd for the last few months and been fighting with me the whole way

she was sputtering a lot and loosing power above half throttle so I gave her a tune up and rebuilt the carb

still no change

turns out my distributor was shit so I put in the matchbox

she ran pretty good for about 3 weeks after that then started sputtering again slowly more and more

I somewhat fixed my vacume advance on my carb (siliconed a little piece of brake line in there because I cant seem to locate the hard line that is supposed to connect to the distributor)

also replaced the intake gasket because i was loosing water slowly

still not a lot of improvement so i bought a compression tester

not a lot of great news

cyl 1: 145

cyl 2: 60

cyl 3: 60

cyl 4: 120

also cylinder 2 has a little bit of water shooting out with out the plugs in

so I've decided to replace the head gasket for now and see where that gets me

hopefully be able to have her up and running again this weekend

going pawn shopping today to look for a torque wrench

so enough of the bad news heres a few pics of where she's at right now

The redline on a Datsun L-16 engine in decent shape is about 6500 RPM.  3000 to 5000 is a good pulling range, with a moderate load.  heavy load, or in a hurry, 4000 to 6000.

Saw you have a L-20-B  lose about 500 to 1000 off the above numbers.

The positive battery post goes to the rear on a 521. This makes the cable to the starter, and the fusebox shorter. It also makes the ground cable to the bolt by the fuel pump closer to the negative terminal.

Here is a picture of the battery, and hold down in my Datsun 521.
