dakotahchore
So I have my 72 Wagon with the stock dash and a KA24DE Engine/5 speed transmission... Everything works except the speedometer and I don't really know where to start, I was looking at the Speedhut GPS speedo which is really nice but I cannot afford a 300$ speedometer. How do I go about buying the cheaper speedhut speedometer that connects to my transmission? Couldn't find much info here about how people wire theirs up.. And when I decide to get a tach, how do I go about connecting that? Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Get a speedo pinion from anything after '79. It will fit in the FS5W71C 5 speed in place of the electric speed sensor. The stock 4 speed used an 18 or 19 tooth gear so preferably get one that has that. If you went to larger diameter wheels you'll need fewer teeth to make the speedo read higher. Maybe a 16 or 17 tooth. A longer speedo cable from a 620 or 280z or zx should reach. A working stock speedo is always best. After market stuff never matches the dash and looks like the owner just threw money at it.. Quote Link to comment
dakotahchore
I agree that it would be nice to have a working stock speedo, but for one it doesn't light up for shit really and I don't have a tach in my cluster. Is there any way to remedy both these problems as well? EDIT: Without an aftermarket tach... if I do one I do them all. Quote Link to comment

blackwolf
i have the same issue with my 720 right now jc whitney has an adapter for aftermarket mechanical speedos but you will probably have to mod your dash to make one fit im not willing to chop my dash up just yet also not sure how your cable hooks up to the speedo but heres the adapter http://www.jcwhitney.com/universal-speedometer-install-adapters/p2030093.jcwx?skuId=1031522&filterid=u0j1 and brand with part number if needed Equus 9871 Quote Link to comment
Shakira
Have you tried the LED replacements for the stock instrument bulbs yet? They help but I dont think the stock gauges are ever gonna be up to a newer cars standard. Ditto for the cable drive I plucked mine out of a Z31 and it works fine. Quote Link to comment
