Diff leaking

Recommended Posts

My diff is leaking from somewhere near where the driveline connects to it and I am unsure on what seals could be bad. What is required to put new seals in it? Would I just be better off finding another diff? This is for a 71 521.

Thanks,

Derick.

Seals are easy to replace. The pinion seal at the front of the diff is probably the one leaking. Unhook the driveline, and there will be a nut that holds the flange which attaches to the driveline on. Take the nut off, and the flange should slide out. Pull out the old seal and replace with a new one. Reassemble. Done deal.

That bolt is ON there, about 200 ft pounds. Have the e brake on and someone hold the brakes. Use a 1/2" ratchet and a piece of pipe over the handle for leverage.

You can pound a wood screw into the seal and pull out with vice grips.

Had to do this on my 620 when I put synthetic gear oil in it. That stuff is sooooo slippery it will get past old seals.
