WTB: Short 5 speed

Recommended Posts

Says it all.

Want to buy a short L-compatible 5 speed.

I know there are not a ton of options.

DogLeg or a short Z-series trans with the L bell attached.

(Mike, please pop in with the one's I'm forgetting)

Better condition will obviously warrant a better(for you) price.

Here's the catch...

The second week of July, I will be in Seattle for a week.

I want to pick it up from someone anywhere between Tri-Cities and Seattle.

Also interested in 521 parts/pieces.

I have a list-but but won't litter here.

Let me know what's to be had.

Thnx!

That's pretty much it for the short ones. Forget the dogleg. For all the bother of putting an L/Z together why not just get a long 5 speed and shorten the driveshaft? You have to modify the cross member anyway and if you ever need to replace it, the heavy lifting is already done. Oh, and you have many more options for gear sets and overdrives.

Why not dog leg Mike?

Haven't given too much thought into a long 5.

Side note.

I have 4.3 in my truck now.

And a 4.11 diff/housing from a 79 620.

Also, when things get under way, I do not plan on anything L20B or higher.

What's my best option? Go!

i will be picking up a 510 from a friend by july that has a dogleg in it, in really good condition from what he told me. i have a long 5 speed in my garage that i am going to put in it, so i will sell the dogleg if interested. it would be all inclusive, fork, throwout and shifter.

What is the transmission for, your 521?

Do you load up your truck and take long trips?

Do you ever tow anything?

If you answered yes to either of these questions, you don't want a dogleg.

I went threw 4 of them doglegs in 5 years, I also went threw two rearends, a 437, and a 488, these failures are due to being over worked, datsun didn't have me in mind when selling these trucks, they had home owner buyers in mind, light duty chores.

The dogleg is a great car 5 speed transmission for the 210/B210, and was also put in the 200SX with a L20b, but if used for truck duties, it's going to fail eventually.

I got tired of finding and changing the tranny every year, so I made my first hybrid 5 speed, it lasted over 5 years, and was just fine when I changed it out, but wouldn't stay in 1st under compression, and the 2nd gear syncros were shot from drag race type shifting from 1st to 2nd.

My first dogleg lasted quite a long time, till I turned the truck into a work truck.

I only ever plan on driving.

And nothing extreme. Only want an L16/L18 in my truck.

Truck duties will not be had in this rig.

Maybe I should just update my thread to any 5 speed.

--except truck 5 speed.

We'll see what turns up.

I have a month still before my trip.

All I have to offer is a dogleg, but I dont have a shifter. I ran it one race in my 521. Three passes. I left easy, and shifted clean. It shifted smooth and quiet. i also have the shortened trans mount bracket that you will need ( the rubber mount is toast) since I went to solid. $125.00 for both. I'm 3.5 miles off the Burlingtom exit, and I'm always home till 2.00 pm.

I ran a dogleg in a 521 with a L20 for several years with no problems. Hauled many loads of firewood. But like Mike and Wayno have said. They are a car trans.
