DAT510
Is the tranny on the left a Z tranny? Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
These are really old oics from NWDE days. Sorry 1st and rev are in the tailstock. 71B on left dogleg on right. (note the bottom counter bearing on the dogleg is much smaller than the B. The 71 on the FS5W71B, and 63 on the FS5W63A is the distance between the main and countershaft in mm. Naturally the larger the distance the larger the bearings and gears you can use to support the torque transmitted. . Quote Link to comment
bryant2482
yea this is the 5 speed ive got in my 720. i pulled out my speedo cog today and the plastic gear was worn and shredded. i can put my finger up inside the tranny and the one gear moves back n forth and spins freely Quote Link to comment
bryant2482
im wondering if i pull it apart will it be a easy fix? Quote Link to comment

Put in reverse and see if it moves easily then. You have the light duty FS5W63A in a 720??? a Z24 stump pulling torque monster?// Quote Link to comment
bryant2482
my 5th gear isnt working. it goes into reverse just fine. i got the fs5w63a outta a 76 620. this was back when i wasnt doing my research lol. so obviusly a fs5w63a is not ment for a 720 then? Quote Link to comment
datsunaholic
A fs5w63a isn't meant for a truck period, nor anything more powerful than a stock < 110HP 2-liter. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
The 720 came with 2 different length FS5W71B transmissions. You want the shorter 26" same as the dogleg length. It will look like this one. Quote Link to comment
bryant2482
ok but will the drive shaft that i got with the fsw63a fit into the fs5w71b without any problems? oh and now i cant shift into reverse. i called the pic a part and i can get a 71b for $180 Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Has to be 26" long (plus or minus) and for a 720 2wd. Yes the driveshaft will work . The spline is the same. Your 720 rear transmission mount may have been modified to fit the dogleg so it may need to be changed back to properly fit the 71B. Just to be clear you do have a Z24 motor correct? Your dogleg is 26" long? Quote Link to comment
bryant2482
yes it has the z24 and its 26" long Quote Link to comment
bryant2482
will the fs5w71b offer better gas milage or make the engine run at lower rpms comapered to the fsw63a? Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
The FS5W71B on the Z24 motor turns 2.% slower than the dogleg. That's about 20 miles or a gallon saved every thousand miles... you won't even notice it. Lower 4 gears are very close too. Quote Link to comment
bryant2482
whats the difference between the FS5W71B and FS5W71C? Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Wow that will take all night. There are three different gear sets for the 71B (wide, mid and close ratios) and with overdrives ranging from 14-26% There are at least two gear sets roughly similar to the mid and close ratio sets on the 71B and with overdrives from 26-31%. These overdrives reflect the more powerful motors used that can handle them. I don't have all of them and there could very well be more. Quote Link to comment
