What coil to use.

I have a L20B with a matchbox, and I was wondering what aftermarket coil is good to use, of course cost is an issue. Thanks in advance.

Save your money and keep using the Nissan EI coil. You'll never know the difference. Buy a can of red spray paint and paint it and no one else will either..

What car can I get the coil from?

 

I only have the l20b coil from the points dizzy.

I used one from a 8 plug 200sx

Any car or truck made from '78 and up. Wrecking yards are cheap or auto supply like NAPA.

u can use the stock coil and ballast

you just wire B of the matchbox to the +side of the ballast resisitor where the blk wht wire meets. youi just wont get the full spark

 

C -side coil

I used an Accel SuperStock for Electronic Ignitions. Was like $45 or so, chrome.

FWIW, I never used a ballast with this ignition.

Those are really a point coil of 1.4 ohms if I remeber right. Now most "Super stock"are madde in China for Accell.

The BIg SUPER COIL is still a USA mader item.

buy a 200sx coil for a 79 200sx

or a MSD Blaster 2 should cover it.

 

Dont use a point coil unless you use the ballast resisitor and keep it wired stock.

Accel 8145C I believe is what I used.

 

Worked great, was for Breakerless Electronic ignitions. As I said, did not run a ballast. I removed it because it ran like butthole with it attached, so I yanked it. The electronic dizzy made a hell of a difference, but that coil brought that L20B of mine to life in higher RPM's. Of course I had a stock coil that was seeping oil. Either way it was like $15 more for the Accel so I went for it. Looked good too.

Yeah, the impedance does make a difference, so the right aftermarket coil for the car is crucial...even with the right coil, I am a fan of factory or OEM supplied(Hitachi,ect) coils. I am running Pertronix coils myself, and the only reason is cause they were cheaper. They do fire hot, but it has no noticeable effect on HP, it just munches through caps and rotors faster.

I believe my coil was .7 Ω. Believe that was the difference between EI and Points ignitions.

Been awhile since I looked everything up, but the .7 Ω is off of the Summit website.

 

I only opted for the spendier chrome version because at the time, my engine bay was pretty clean, and I wanted something shiny.

The chrome coil looked best and it worked great.

.7 ohm and EI type is correct for a matchbox.

 

PS get a nice chrome bumper for that car
