79-510 suspension

i just got a 79 510 and i was wondering how to change the straight axle that it has right now to an independent rear drive like the older 510..

Not sure why you would want to get rid of the 4-link live axle, but...

 

You would have to do do quite a bit of fab to do the swap. Lot's of fab really.

The later A-10 isn't designed to support the IRS at those points or for the coil springs. I suppose anything is do-able but lots of thought and fabrication will be needed, and for what real gain? It will run essentially the same and you would have to drive it pretty hard to feel any difference. It's biggest advantage would be to show it off to a 510 owner.

And most 510 owners don't acknowledge a hl 510. they consider it a 510 in name only.

Actually they acknowledge them as parts doners. :lol: L20Bs, matchboxs, steering boxes, IR alternators, optional 5 speed doglegs.
