L series Input shaft shaft seal

Input shaft seal is leaking on my L series. Theres 4 of us working on it right now, but I need to know how the front cover comes off on the L series truck transmission. I don't know the model number specifically, but I believe all the front covers are the same.

 

 

 

 

It's a 4 speed in a '76 620

5 or 6(?)....12 mill bolts hold it on.

Gonna be stuck in place....so remove clutch fork and stick a wooden dowel/and or through there. Hammer dowel at base of cover...not the end covering the input shaft...or you will break it

For a 5 speed...I'm assuming the 4 speed is the same

Use a socket extension and hammer against the pivot ball or you will snap off the nose on the input shaft that the release collar slides along.

 

 

 

Save any shims that fall out.

 

The seal is 32114 Y4000 about $5

Gasket is 32112 E9001 about $4 You can use RTV but have a care it doesn't blob out inside and prevent proper oiling of the main and counter bearings... less is more.

On another note, Mike how important are those shims? I recall seeing on last night that thin as paper fall out, and in my rush I don't remember if it went back in or not Is it critical that it goes back in?

They are thin. If you haven't installed the transmission yet it only takes a moment to put it in. The front counter shaft bearing is usually the one that fails in an FS5W71B.

 

When the front case half is installed over the gears the (bottom) counter bearing sticks out slightly above the case metal. At the assembly plant this distance is measured and an appropriate shim of that thickness is added around the bearing. Now when the cover plate is bolted down it presses on the shim and not directly on the end of the bearing. How critical this is I don't know.

Thanks Mike, I went ahead and slid it in. I figured it would be stupid to take a chance and leave it out and I only spent a few minuets stuffing it back in over the bearing.

the 510 4 speed paper gaskets are not longer avail. Dont know if the same for you.

 

also I got the last of the 5 speed 200sx seals that go on the output shaft of trans which is same as the 4 speedd 510 ones. I used a mic to measure the seal as I looked on Rockauto.com as they list seals which they had 3 different ones with the specs. I call all the local seal shops but they had nothing and just waited for the seal from nissan that Datzenmike gave me the part number

 

So you find a paper gasket for the cover or use a seal?
