Help me identify the problem with this amp head

Recommended Posts

Somebody just gave me a Peavey Supreme amp head that they said wasn't working. I tinker with electronics, and I've made my own little practice amp, but I've never worked with transformers or anything with enough juice to kill me, so I'm a little nervous about tinkering with it too much.

Anyhow, I plugged it into some speakers, and got nothing. Then, just for kicks, I plugged it into an amp, and it sent the sound through it. The controls for the amp head work -- reverb, high/mid/low, etc., but it's not actually amplifying the sound.

I opened up the back of it and saw two transformers there, and one with a 4-terminal plug that goes to the output jack. I grabbed my multi-meter to see if any juice was flowing from the transformer to the plug, and... nothing.

But I don't know much about what to expect from a transformer, so I might be testing it incorrectly. However, my hunch is that the transformer is dead.

Can anybody confirm or deny this? Is there any other way of testing the amp head?
