Diesel33g
It's on my l20. I just took it out for a first drive to get a feel for it. and the carb was smoking and there was oil sprayed EVERYWHEREEEEEEEEEE. Any ideas? Quote Link to comment
dave71
you might have a gasket go out or a seal or some bolts came loose.....but whatever it is i can almost guarantee it's coming from the front of the engine behind the fan.... oooohhhhhh CHECK THE FUEL PUMP.... clean engine then start engine and have it run at 1100 rpms and just watch it see where it comes out of Quote Link to comment
Diesel33g
My fuel pump isn't working correctly I already know that. but it's connected and not leaking from there. I think it's from the head. maybe it wasn't bolted all the way or the gasket is gone. Either way I think I'm needing a new engine xD Quote Link to comment
dave71
rebuild would be cheaper and quicker Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
The top of the valve cover has a hose ... where is yours going to? Check your oil level. Did you add oil recently Quote Link to comment
Diesel33g
I changed the oil and filter the day before, the oil level WAS just below the MAX line. Now it's about halfway down. There isn't a hose on top just a plug, I assumed it was from the intake which was removed. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
The top of the valve cover needs to be open to the outside air. If not blow-by gasses will build pressure inside the motor. This will try to find a way out through the valve cover gasket, or worse. Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
isn't a hose on top just a plug, WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Do not plug it if anything route a hose down underneath car. If pluged I bet oil getting sucked thru PCV. whats wrong with the fuel pump? if its driving its working. or am I missing something? Quote Link to comment
Diesel33g
It only runs on starter fluid. I pulled the fuel line out of it and it wasn't spraying or anything so I think it's the floater needle got stuck or something. (I'm a noob to anything other than BMW and the VG30DE) And the PCV isn't and wasn't plugged. Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
If the rocker cover vent is plugged, that means the PCV system is plugged. It's all part of the same system. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Well there is a small hole in the PCV valve that allows some blow-by into the intake but on older motors the amount can overpower the PCV easily. In that case it has to find a way out of the engine and that's why the vent on the valve cover. Normally it lets air in to replace that taken away by the intake PCV valve but under some conditions it reverses and lets fumes out. If some idiot plugged the valve cover vent, it will build pressure and pop the valve cover gasket to get out. Quote Link to comment
Diesel33g
Alright I'll check out to see if it's plugged or not. And I'm gonna replace the gasket. Is there an easy way to replace rod bearings? Like without pulling the block out D: Quote Link to comment
Rob W.
I don't think you are understanding what they are saying. The plug on top of the motor should be a hose connected to a filter assembly. The system is plugged no one is wondering if it might be we know it is. Mostly because of this the valve cover gasket blew or the pcv valve allowed oil through. Take the plug off the topp and run a hose to a filter (u can buyone at autozone) and then run it and see if any gasket blew. Your engine will not take you for a ride without a fuel pump. There may be a way to get to your rod with out rmoving the motor and will probably take three times as long as doing it with motor out. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
(I'm a noob to anything other than BMW and the VG30DE) I understand. Just in case we are talking about different things. The vent we are talking about is on top of the valve cover just behind the plug wires with a hose going back and into the air filter as shown below. This hose must at least be open to the outside air. . Quote Link to comment
Diesel33g
I just took the valve cover off and it was hand tightened, and only has like 1/8th of the gasket left Ohhh, there wasn't anything there at all. I'll get that and check it, Thanks rob. Quote Link to comment
Rob W.
I just took the valve cover off and it was hand tightened, and only has like 1/8th of the gasket left That will make it leak. Good thing it happened right away and not when you were mile from the house or something. There is a hose nipple on the back of the filter to run a hose from your breather on top of the valve cover. Keep fightin dude Quote Link to comment
Diesel33g
Yeah, it was nice to stop next to my house to get a drink and find it then :) I reached that point where I know everything thats wrong and now just waiting for money to fix it with :P Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
O rileys carries Felpro gaskets. They make a nice valve cover gasket and front cover sets. I use all Felpro except maybe the headgasket. I use nissan if I have them. valve cover gaskets maybe appear to be hand tight cayuse they usually are. about 5-7 pounds is all that is needed 1 Quote Link to comment
Diesel33g
Oh, that would make sense, it being aluminum and all, haha. It was probably just the gasket then. and good thing there's an O'Reilly's down the street that has the gasket in stock! Quote Link to comment
