73Datsun620
I got a call from Datsun Parts today and Al told me that he did not catch it when I ordered the rear conversion kit, but he is still finishing and developing the Wilwood set for the rear so it will be about three weeks for him to finish that. So, looks like we will have more time to work on the other rear end related issues in the meantime. Quote Link to comment
73Datsun620
They are here!! Thanks to Al at Datsun Parts! I'll update as soon as we get them on!! Quote Link to comment
Slixon
That is so pretty, better than porn! Can't wait to see the kit installed! Quote Link to comment
73Datsun620
Well, we got the rearend out from under the truck yesterday, and it was a little more work than we originally thought it would be. The U-bolts had to be cut off and since we did not have anything else we spent some time with a hacksaw working on them, but we got them off. Quote Link to comment
73Datsun620
Went to Autozone to see my good buddy Frank today, and we found a couple of choices for longer lug studs to try. I took them home and we got lucky with the first try; it was the correct length for the wheels and the spline matched up almost perfectly. We are one step closer to getting the rear end put back together and putting on that awesome brake setup. I'm still having some problems getting one of the backing plates off hub assembly, but I have just about got it. I'll update more soon. Quote Link to comment
73Datsun620
I found a parts truck for our project! I'm going to pick it up Monday, http://tulsa.craigslist.org/cto/3065266044.html, I'd make this one my project if it had a good title lol. Quote Link to comment
Shaggs2Dope
Reminds me of when I got my truck when I was 12... started rebuilding it piece by piece. Great project, congrats Quote Link to comment
73Datsun620
I picked up the parts truck we found for $300 and I looked inside to see this wonderful sight: Quote Link to comment
Willdatsun
$300 dollars thats insane. I'm going to have to move there. That does not happen in England. Quote Link to comment
73Datsun620
I got the new project truck to the house today, cleaned it up a little bit, and mocked up the wheels....It's going to look SWEET when we are done!! Quote Link to comment
mrbigtanker
keep up the good work. Quote Link to comment
73Datsun620
Swapped out the cowl, windshield wiper arms, driver's side fender, and started painting the grill today. We sprayed rust converter on the body panel under the cowl and cleaned up the engine comparment. We have a choice to make too though, do we keep the l16 that is in the blue truck or move the l20b over into it instead, it would mean removing and installing two engines in two different trucks. Is the l20b worth that? Quote Link to comment
Willdatsun
l16s rev better imo Quote Link to comment
73Datsun620
Yeah, from what I read and the amount of work it would take to do the swap; i decided to keep the l16 in it. Today, I pulled the old rear end out of the blue truck, removed the other backing plate on the hub assembly for the rear end I am using, and installed the old rear end under the old project so my friend can pick it up today. Man it seems like I did less when I type it out, but that took about half the day lol. Quote Link to comment
73Datsun620
I also looked around under the truck and discovered that the entire exhaust was redone not too long ago, YAY Quote Link to comment
peanutbuttercups
That truck is looking sweet. They look so good in blue!!! Torn between panting mine white or blue. Thanks for the inspiration, back to work. Quote Link to comment
73Datsun620
The only thing I accomplished today was helping my buddy pick up the old 73 so he could start restoring it. Quote Link to comment
73Datsun620
Progress for the day, I painted the rear end, lowering blocks, and the u bolt top plates. I also got the rear end back under the truck and installed the new shocks, tomorrow I will put the new lug bolts into the hub assemblies and install the brakes and axle shafts. Lots to do but we are making progress :) Quote Link to comment
73Datsun620
I couldn't resist so I went back out this evening and put all the lug studs in. Quote Link to comment
73Datsun620
Well, I got out there today, installed the driver's side axle shaft, put on the bracket, installed the rotor, and when I went to mount the caliper to the bracket the lower hole stripped out. I'm waiting for Al over at Datsun Parts to reply so I know what I need to do for a replacement bracket. Quote Link to comment
73Datsun620
I at least got both of the axle shafts into the rear end, so when I get the bracket back from Datsun Parts I will have pictures to post of the disc brakes installed. :) Quote Link to comment
73Datsun620
We pulled the bench seat and carpet out today, and we found that both of the rear frame attatchment locations need to be replaced. The metal surrounding the bolts has completely rusted out, and I have a guy in Van buren working up some replacement pieces for me to fix the problem with. In the meantime I cleaned the floor pans and sprayed them with rust reformer to save on future rust issues. Quote Link to comment
73Datsun620
Long awaited Disc brakes on the rear of the truck!!!! YAY!!! Quote Link to comment
73Datsun620
Sorry for the polarized images but it seems my 4 year old thought I needed that turned on and didn't tell me until after I took the pictures lol. Quote Link to comment
