Help! torque values

Recommended Posts

Hey folks, hope a couple of you might know: The torque values for the two bolts holding the alt to the bracket ?and the torque value for the two bolts holding the bracket to the engine block? Also is the bracket the same on the 69 engine as on the 70-73 or are there slight differences in the mounting bracket.

The bracket on my engine has a broken bolt in the front so I'll be swapping a bracket from one of my other engines tomorrow. the manual I have doesn't cover the alt bracket at all, your help is appreciated. Thanks

Probably around 30 ft lbs is plenty. If they're 17mm bolts, use medium strength with a regular ratchet. Basically get them more than hand tight, but not big bubba tight as in applying a 2 foot breaker bar to make sure they're juuuust right. :D

Look in the beginning of your manual, it may have a section on torque specs based on the size of fastener. For instance the manifold bolts are 8mm, they're good for 12-15 ft-lbs. 10mm are good for 25-30 ft lbs, and so on and so forth. It's not a critical attachment; you won't need exact specs. Torquing down the head would require more exact specs for instance.

Alt bracket to block .......................... 14-22 ft. lb.

Alt. through bolts to bracket.......... 50-60 ft. lb.

Alt adjustment bar ........................... 7-12 ft. ls.

This is for the '78 L20B. Earlier ones must be similar.

Did it up last night. After I got 2" of grime off the mount from the 69 engine it was the same light blue color as the block I'm running (bonus). Just went at it and torqued it to "just right". everythings holding together fine and the annoying squeel, strange knock, and wierd vibration sound from the fan @ 2400rpm are gone. I love it when the engine sounds right :). Thanks guys
