NewB in Phoenix / Rat-Z

Recommended Posts

I think I have found my new home.

I am stripping my 1973 240Z to make it a Rat-Racer Z. Didn't know there was a whole WORLD on the internet just for me...

Rattle Can Olive Drab Green, racecar interior, L24 with Triples for now.

As of today, just mocked up the new panel, car it stripped.

Needs wiring and panel completed and get the car running again.

Then rattle can inside and out, gut the muffler and off to the street.

I had loaned the car to my brother and Pack Rats destroyed the wiring while he had it in Tucson. So F-them, its a Rat now.

How do I post pictures up in here.

I cut and welded the gaping holes in the floorboards, rust-sealed and seam-sealed. Real hackjob on the welding, oh well.

Salvaging the old dashboard frame to make a new race-type panel.

I'm thinking about doing something funky and keeping the old gauges in the new panel.

Remember the goal is to get the car driving again, then go nuts with an LSx.

Today I am going to do more panel work and lay out the new wire harness.

For now there is an L24 with triple 40s.

I rebuilt these carbs 2 years ago and had them running pretty darn good. But I will install a Wideband to help with future tuning.

Its a 5 speed and R180 now.

Some P.O. put in a lot of good parts on this car. There are big shocks, lowering springs, strut bars, XR700 and some other goodies.

For the next guy....

I bought a ZZ-20 re-wire harness off Craigslist brand new in box. It is made by "It's a Snap".

The wires and fusebox seem to be good enough quality and they provide excellent wire lengths for my Z.

But its just too many circuits. Unless you are planning to add A/C, sunroof, power seats, foosball table and 4 wheel motion - go with a smaller kit.

The extra wires can be tucked away, but aren't as clean and contribute to that daunting feeling of being overwhelmed.

Supposedly the Tech Support from "Its a Snap" is great, but I can't reach them yet.

Their office hours are 8am to 3pm eastern, but they don't answer the phone from 8-10, then have lunch from 11 to 2 and I have yet to find the sweet spot required to reach a human.

Their written documentation is useless. There is a 4 page booklet that comes with the kit, but it just doesn't tell you anything.

It will work though. I just drew my own (gnarly) schematics and have started from the back and will work forward.

More to follow.

Re-wire is coming along. Lighting is all done and that was freaking me out the most.

I had to creatively simplify the taillights since the stock setup is insanely complex.
