The switch in the transmission is moved by the shifter rail internally.

But the switch may be just burned out. Unplug the wires and check it for continuity (OHM meter or test light) in reverse, and no continuity in any other position. You may find the wires just fall off, and there's your problem.

The reverse light is the bottom of the two black knob things sticking out of where the tailstock meets the main body of the transmission. Anyone with a Datsun has one of these 4 speeds laying around in the back yard. Ask around and someone will send you one. As stated, if the plastic cover is loose the weather will get at the copper and erode/corrode the wires off.
