sdsurf
In my 72 4spd transmission, how do I add fluid and check the level? Quote Link to comment
Skib
should just be a plug on the side of the trans. Iv found its easyer to get a length of hose and stick it in there and pour it threw the hose. When you can stick your finger in the hole and feel the gear oil level is right there just below the hole your good. Quote Link to comment

datzenmike
The drain bung hole is on the very bottom and is likely a square hole that a 1/2" drive ratchet end without socket will fit. Remove to drain and inspect the end. It has a magnet and collects ferous metal like gear chips and ball bearings. A few fine grains and a black paste is normal. The fill bung hole on the F4W71B is half way up the driver's side. Oil level should be even with the opening. Don't bother fingering your bung hole to check it... just change the oil!!! Use GL-4 (NOT GL-5) 80-W-90 if you don't expect temps above 100F. Thicker if above. Synthetic is good but WILL leak past the old rear seal. If you go with synthetic... change that $6 seal it's easy. I use synthetic, and don't find it any quieter, probably because it was already quiet, but the gear changes are 'easier' (hard to describe) and click loudly into gear... very satisfying.
