Problems with 1978 datsun b210

G'day!

I've been having problems with my b210 and have decided to tap into the resources here at Ratsun, eh.

Problems started soon after I purchased the car. I've replaced the coil and plugs so far. It was running great after this (plus being timed) but its gone south.

Its having a lot of trouble idling once the choke is off and has very poor acceleration. Its also backfiring and i'm curious how to adjust the mixture. I'm low on funds and can't afford a mechanic so i'm attempting this on my own..which is why i purchased the car anyways, I wanna learn!

I've started replacing the vacuum lines but have ran into a snag. The anti-dieseling valve electrical connector isn't working and the electrical connection for my throttle opener solenoid broke off right near the base. I've done a little reading and i've come to the conclusion that this part(throttle opener) isn't really needed. (the part that the electrical connection is attached to, with the vacuum hose going to the air cleaner had the hose plugged already when I purchased it) So i've taken that connection and attached it to the anti-dieseling valve and made sure it was working...which it is...but i'm still getting no idle.

Once i've replaced all the vacuum lines i'll get back to you guys, I just wanted to hear some other reasons it might be doing this!

Listen near the carb and have someong turn the key on/off/on/off you should hear a clicking sound if the idle cut solenoid is connected properly. If it isn't working there will be no fuel to the idle circuit... no idle.

The idle mixture is adjustable but not the driving mixture. That is set by the primary jet size and is fixed. If the jet is partially blocked, less fuel is delivered and the motor will run lean and backfire through the carb.

Pull the plugs after a drive. Are they: white/very light, tan/brown or black?

I pulled the plugs and they are very black (they were brand new a week or two ago). I cleaned them up and it fired up and was able to maintain a higher rpm but still ended up stalling

The car won't idle at all now though and I have to keep it floored in park just to keep it going.

The idle-cut solenoid is working, but its getting power from the throttle opener connector...not sure if that'll matter!

Concerning the throttle opener...is it necessary? I currently have no power going to it and all nipples plugged just incase. I also have plugged the EGR just encase its faulty...should I be doing something about power to it also?

I'm going to check my fuel pump but I seem to have lots of gas going into the carb.

I got luck yesterday and picked up a haynes shop manual at a thrift store for cheap yesterday so i'll take a look in it today.

(they had tons for many different datsuns if anyone wants one)

1. You do not need the throttle opener. Just disconnect the wire

2. If the idle-cut solenoid doesn't work, it won't idle. It won't run well a lower RPM, but works OK at half-throttle or more.

3. Don't bother with replacing all the vacuum lines. Only replace those that are cracked on the ends. Pull the ends off and carefully inspect

4. Check all the vacuum diaphragms -- especially choke pull-off and distributor advance.

5. Clean the carb bowl. This happened to me several times, with similar symptoms to yours

a. Remove the jet covers from bottom of carburetor (you can do this while it's on the car).

b. Remove the jets (mark which one is left and is right jet)

c. spray carb cleaner down the vent tube at the top of carb. Wash it this way as good as you can

d. Put jets back in. Don't tighten too tight.

e. Replace jet covers. Get it fairly tight, but don't use too much force

These symptoms usually suggest an ignition problem. But the 1978 B-210 has a good electronic ignition system, so I doubt that's the problem.

The plugs being black say rich you may just have dirt in the float valve. So do the carb clean as above and go from there if it runs good for a short time then does it again the float level climbed and you are flooding out. You would see fuel pouring down carb and smell fuel.

Good luck
