720 Shifter Boot Question

Have a torn shifter boot,..... it has a square base.

Looking around I found boots with a round base, and others with a square base,

 

The square base unit looks like a match to what I have, but, it's referred to as,.....

 "Gear Shift Shifter Lever Boot Cover Rubber for Datsun 720 Pro Pickup Truck"

 

What's the deal?

I got mine off of Ebay.You can take off the piece that it goes into,under there,there is a place where you can line up the boot and use clips to hold it in.I used my old clips that were on my rubber pieces where the glass comes out the door.I bought new rubber pieces years ago.It is leather.

[Seven Two Oh No]

The 4WD versions have an inner round boot that seals the base of the shifter at the floor and an outer square boot that attaches to the console. Looks like you have a 2WD which I think originally just used a round boot

My round inner Nissan boot is small to fit my opening to keep heat out.I have a brand new round boot.This is what I used to seal it with.I always thought they all had square boots.Now I know.I noticed on a lot of 720's including mine,that they will leak at the bottom boot and cause the heat to eat away the black paint on the shifter.It did mine and I sanded it and painted it.No heat comes thru now.

My boot came today, looks nice.

 

I have another question,.... where the shift stick enters / attaches to the transmission.

There is a small rubber boot. Mine is tore up.

Is that small boot available as a replacement piece?

I ordered one off ebay but it was a piece of crap that quickly split. Ended up buying a boot for a big rig (https://tinyurl.com/bdcrjf74) and cut off the bottom flange and part of the next accordion fold to make a nice interference fit in the hole. Had to zip tie the top of the boot since it was made for a bigger diameter shifter, but it's held up well for years

You know there where the boot is larger than the shifter,......

a short piece of the right size hose, (measure the shaft and the boot), maybe power steering hose?

slit it and stick it in there like an adapter.

I would follow up with one of those skinny mini hose clamps.

The smaller rubber boot that is under the larger boot is part 32862-e9300.  Just bought one, seems to be on every 720 that I've seen,  Always torn up on all of them as well.

You surely could remove the trans and put it on the bench, but that might be the most difficult way possible.

 

The stick shift comes off, a pin, 32849 goes thru the shifter and held in place by a C/E clip.

 

Now, the spot where the pin goes thru, looks roughly as thick as the shifter, so maybe slide carefully over from the top.

Haven't done mine yet.  I might take the e/c clip off and what direction looks like it will go on with least stretching.
