jerryt
I have a L16 motor that sat for many years. I got it started and everything was fine. but the car sat for about 4 months. when I went to start it I got gear clash. This never happened before. would a low battery cause this? I also had the starter tested and it tested ok. Any ideas? Thanks Jerry Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
If it started fine before, sitting for months would not affect the ring gear. First do what you can to improve what you have. Clean the battery posts and clamps and assure that the other ends, ground on head and positive on the starter lug are clean and tight. Now charge you battery or get a good battery or jump start yours and see. Quote Link to comment

jerryt
We turned the flywheel to make sure all the teeth were not broken. All the teeth there in good shape. The bendix gears looked on. I will have it tested one more time. Then I will pu I will clean all the connections well and charge the battery. Then cross my fingers. It was just weird the car started all the time. And then it started giving me problems. Im hoping it will work. Thanks Jerry Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
It's easier to charge the battery or get a boost. Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
I would hook the +12(30) from the starter lug to make it look cleaner Edited January 15 by banzai510(hainz) Quote Link to comment
jerryt
Well I finally got time to work on my starter problem. With the help of my kid we bolted the new starter and then hooked up the battery and my Datsun fired right up. Evidently when I took the old starter to have t checked. the solenoid wasn't kicking out and retracting fast enough. The starter I guess just got old and had oil drippings in the solenoid. Plus when they tested the starter it had a burnt electric smell. . Thanks for ll the help. Thanks Jerry Quote Link to comment
