Stinky
Has anybody used GM Syncromesh Trans oil in their Nissan trans? It is about 30 weight and synthetic. It is for use in GM manual transmissions. It can also be used in Hondas. Honda says that you can also use 10-30 oil in theirs, in a pinch. Has anybody used anything besides GL4 in their manual transmission? Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
I use it and have for 10? years. ast I tried it wasn't available, at least at GM. I asked what the Camaro and Corvette used and they said it was ATF now. Anyway highly recommend it. Shifts feel faster with the same effort, crisp and clickity click and clean. I stopped downshifting because of the slight crunch of gears but the Delco GM oil took it away. Much easier shifting when the transmission is still cold. (I find the GL4 a tiny bit stiff the first few shifts of the day) This continues into colder weather also if you DD in the winter.. Quote Link to comment
fiveoneO
Amsoil makes a synchromesh that I've had good luck with in my Honda. Not sure how it would do in a Datsun, but this is what was recommended to me when the GM stuff became no longer available. Quote Link to comment

And yes, ATF. I just bought a new Tremec 5 speed for a swap I'm working on, and it calls for ATF III fluid. Trans fluid hold up under high heat better than gear oil, but it's about as slippery as sand paper, so I wonder what they are doing different in these modern transmissions to allows for that. datzenmike
After 6 months my very new '70 Dart 340 started growling. Took it in and had the bearings replaced under warranty. Yeah, it had ATF in it for the cold winter months. Perhaps half 'n half but it was pink. They put the same crap in so I replaced with regular 90w gear oil. No more problems. I like to leave in gear for the night but in extreme cold you can't pull out of gear in the morning to let warm up in neutral. Quote Link to comment
