L20b swap into 73 Datsun

We are swapping a L20B in our 73 620. The oil pan is hitting the crossmember. The oil pan sits differently from the L16 that came out. 
How can we make this work?

Easy.... put the L16 oil pan and pick up tube on and use the L16 dip stick. It'll fit perfectly.

Well……. All that went away with the engine🤦‍♀️

so I guess it’s time to hunt those things down and buy new

The old oil pan had a hole in it and the head gasket was blown. 
It wasn’t a quick swap. We actually bought the engine during Covid and are just now able to get it in. But for sure won’t make that mistake again😉

Easier to patch the hole, than move the sump on your pan.

 

Would a Z24 pan fit?

There is about a 18-20 degree difference in tilt between the L and the Z series engines. While the bottom of the L series pan is parallel to the road a Z series pan on an L series would have a 20 degree downward tilt on the right side exposing it to bottoming out on manhole lids.

Got in touch with the guy who built the motor. He installed the wrong pan and is overnighting the correct one 😃
