84 720 rebuild

If you have a z24 in your truck just do a rebuild of that engine. I did it with help from the forum and it wasn't that difficult.  All the parts are available at very reasonable prices. I removed much of the smog stuff and put a  32/36 carb on it and it runs well with plenty of power.

To me, the trickiest part is getting the pistons in the bores with the rings clocked properly. You need a good ring compressor and a little practice. If you slam it in without squaring up the ring compressor, you can break or bend a ring on the way in.

Basic engine rebuilding tools include -

Dead blow hammer

Ring compressor

Rod bolt covers/protectors

Ball hone (for cleaning the cylinder walls)

Gasket scraper

Some kind of dial indicator, or at the very least, a set of feeler gauges

Calibrated torque wrench

Wire wheel on bench grinder for cleaning parts (threads on head bolts and cleaning gasket surfaces from oil pan and front cover)

Block of wood, aluminum or some other metal (for sanding deck surface)

Emery cloth (for sanding deck surface (bottom of block/oil pan rails, head surface and front cover too, maybe even the main and rod caps)

Scotch-Brite pads (for cleaning pistons and other parts)

Timing chain tensioner tool (I use a piece of 5/8" heater hose with a slug of steel shoved up inside)

Sockets (1 1/16" socket for crank damper bolt, all others are basic)

Screwdrivers

End wrenches (adjusting valves)

Impact gun (use to install crank damper bolt)

Air compressor (for blowing off cleaned parts and for impact gun)

Basic supplies for rebuilding -

Solvent or gasoline (for cleaning parts)

Gasgacinch (glue for gaskets)

Black or grey RTV (for oil pan gasket)

Anti-seize (for head bolts)

Red Loctite (for rod bolts and crank pulley bolt)

Assembly lube (or just plain oil, for main and rod bearings, I also stuff the oil pump with assembly lube prior to installation, to help create suction on first fire)

WD40 (used to spray down the pistons and cylinder walls prior to piston installation)

Engine enamel (if you want to paint the block, I use Dupli-Color)

Am I forgetting anything guys?
