Orange620
There's a 79 620 in the Pick n Pull. The shift lever has already been taken. Were all 79 620s with manual, 5 speed? How can you ID it by just looking at it while its installed, that its a 5 speed and not a 4? Quote Link to comment
datsunaholic
4-speeds had a cover plate just forward of the shifter. 5-speeds did not. '79s came standard with a 4-speed. Quote Link to comment
jefe de jefes
Do you have a 4 speed? I think the 5 speed is like 4 inches longer. Quote Link to comment

It is very easy to tell them apart but you will have to climb under it, to look. The 4spd will have a narrow (2" X 6") inspection plate with 6 bolts holding it on plus a small plastic vent. It's located on the top of the tail stock just in front of the shifter. Here is a 4spd: Look just ahead of the shifter for the narrow cover plate with 6 bolts. This definitively identifies it as a 4spd F4W71B. http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q251/datzenmike/transF4W71Blongtail1.jpg[/img]"] http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q251/datzenmike/transF4W71Blongtail3.jpg[/img]"] Quote Link to comment

The 'new' 620 4spd F4W71B was first used in the '74 truck and is 31.5" long. The 'new' 5spd FS5W71B became an option in '77 and is the same length.... so, a 5spd can be swapped into any 4 spd '74-'79 truck without mods. Quote Link to comment
