bweaver
So I pulled the Distributor. And then I checked to see if the shaft placement. And it was at about 1125, so I’m fixing that now 1 Quote Link to comment

This is what Mike is trying to tell you.... Have you actually put a timing light on it? Your probably not really fully advanced, you just ran out of adjustment room, which means you need to index the oil pump so you can get the correct timing and lock down the plate..... 2 Quote Link to comment
bweaver
I don’t have timing marks. Just TDC mark. 1 Quote Link to comment

If you know tdc, then make 2 marks with a paint marker, white out or anything you can see.... one on the pulley and a corresponding one next to it ( on something stationary) or even a coat hang bent and attached temporarily to pointing to the mark on the pulley..... That will reference tdc, and zero timming.. . If you rent borrow or buy a timing light the newer ones have a dial for advance, usually to check full advance when you go off the pointer scale.... in your case at idle if you only need 3 degrees, I think Mike said, you can set the advance on the dial to 3 degrees and you'll line up your tdc marks... by lining up the tdc whatever the dial reads is how much advance your running..... 1 Quote Link to comment

Also my cam is timed properly, but at TDC the rotor dosent align with the #1 cylinder, or so I think. Make sure its tdc on the compression stroke.... that matters.... 2 Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
You should have this timing pointer with the saw tooth edges bolted to the timing cover beside the alternator. At TDC, the top point, (ZERO) should have a small nick on the pulley right next to it. Between a point and a notch is 2.5 degrees, between two points is 5 degrees. 1 Quote Link to comment
Crashtd420
Is it possible to put the distributor cap on wrong? 180 degrees off, would that even matter or is the cap a mirror image? 1 Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
You could place it at at least 4 positions or every 90 degrees as long as you move all the wires around to match. I've already posted a picture of the distributor cap and rotor position at TDC. 1 Quote Link to comment
Crashtd420
Maybe I got the wrong cap in my mind ... I'm looking at this.... I know my L16 but this seems a bit different Wasnt sure if the 2 coil 8 wires were a little more particular.... Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
There are 4 pairs if wires so 4 positions possible, maybe more but the wires won't agree with the markings on the cap. If at 90, 180 or 270 you would need to move all the wires 90, 180, 270 also. Quote Link to comment
bweaver
I got it running, really good actually. It’s five degrees advanced right now. Tried three. But 5 seemed better. 2 Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
The Z24 timing spec is 3 degrees + or- 2 degrees. This would allow for regional gas quality and temperatures. Well good then! Quote Link to comment
