jfbrink Posted June 21, 2018 Report Share Posted June 21, 2018 Hi, I have two unrelated issues with my '67 1.3L WPL411 wagon that I wanted to tap the braintrust on: (1) I get a terrible exhaust smell over 40mph. After taping all the seams around the back, I found that it's coming in under the bottom edge of the hatch. There is weatherstrip there, but I guess it's not sealing. Has anyone had this problem and/or replaced the weatherstrip with something currently available for sale? (2) Also above 40mph, but especially past 50mph, I'm getting a loud, high, even whine from the rear of the wagon. I can't quite tell if it's coming more from one side or the other. Is this more likely to be a wheel bearing or the center section? Thanks, Jesse. Quote Link to comment

datsunrides Posted June 21, 2018 Report Share Posted June 21, 2018 1. Try extending the tailpipe or maybe a turndown tip? Probably easier than finding weatherstrip. 2. Usually wheel bearings will make a rumbling type noise. Whining could be something in the diff. Just to help isolate, when you hear the noise, push in the clutch to make sure the noise is not something in the trans. If it’s still there with the clutch disengaged, probably need to drop the pumpkin and check it out. May as well replace the axle bearings if you don’t know the history since you have to pull them to drop the center. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike Posted June 21, 2018 Report Share Posted June 21, 2018 If you have never changed the diff oil and don't know when it was last changed, do it now. It should be checked every 15K and replaced every 30K. For all you know the oil level may just be low. You'll need just over a liter of GL-5 80-90W oil. The drain bung has a magnet on the end to collect ferrous metal. Normally it may have a fine black paste on it. Wipe it clean so you have a gauge for the next time it's changed. Quote Link to comment
MikeRL411 Posted June 21, 2018 Report Share Posted June 21, 2018 (edited) Also, the 411s have an under hood rain fall drain at both ends of the air intake box for the heater assembly. If you do not have the fabric drain hose extension from this intake box to the sheet metal "clamp" at the bottom of the firewall, and have a slight EXHAUST manifold gasket leak, you will be sucking exhaust gases into the heater box. Yes, this will give a very noticeable exhaust smell. If missing the hoses, early VW heater hoses are almost the correct diameter and can be secured to the sheet metal drains with screw type hose clamps. jfbrink Posted June 26, 2018 Author Report Share Posted June 26, 2018 I've done more checking on the whining noise from the rear: 1. Only happens on deceleration. 2. Goes away when clutch is pushed in. 3. Differential is filled to correct level. 4. Driver's side rear wheel is easily slid in and out about 1/4" when jacked up. 5. When twisting pinion back and forth to test lash, there is a crunchy/clunky feel halfway through the range of motion. Jesse. Quote Link to comment
