71-521
Ok you experts out there in electrical know how... Dash light bulbs in my truck have been getting dimmer and dimmer over the last 10 years. So I pulled the cluster out and discovered why...only 2 bulbs were working, the rest were burnt out! So I went to my spare 510 clusters thinking that I could just scavenge a few bulbs out and make it good again... Here's what I discovered...the 510 cluster has 2 different bulbs in it...194's and 158's...So I checked what came out of the 521 and found 3 different bulbs in there...161's, 158's and a 194...no rhyme or reason to where they were either... I have searched on the net and came up empty as to where is listed what wattage (or cp) these bulbs are... In my search of the net, I discovered on the Sylvania site that the 510 should have 1445's in it's dash according to them... so, the question is where has the wattage or candle power of specific bulbs? I'll check the fsm next to see if I can glean any info from it.... Quote Link to comment
71-521
ok, found some of it in the fsm... 158's are 2cp and 3.4 watts...and used for the instrument lighting... 161's are only 1cp and 1.7 watts...and used for the turn signals, oil, high beam and Ign indicators so that leaves still what's the rating of the 194's? flyerdan
194 is 5 watts, don't know the cp. Quote Link to comment
71-521
thanks, but for it being 5 watts compared to the 3.4 for the 158's they look exactly the same as far as brightness... I'm concerned that the cluster wiring won't be able to handle the extra power the brighter bulbs would draw... Quote Link to comment
pope_face
Rewire the cluster! Or try the 158's if they've got the same plug... if it fits, gives the same effect, and uses less power, it's probably good. If any of those things don't apply, then it's probably best to stick with what was there originally. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
If the bulb is brighter, use it. Wattage is a poor way to measure brightness anyway. HID headlights are about 40 watts and look how bright they are. I have a 1 watt LED bike helmet light and it's easily brighter than a 28watt signal lamp. Sure would be nice to solder some smaller LEDs into the plug in dash lights. Quote Link to comment
pope_face
You can buy LED lamps like that as far as I know... I'm not sure if you could get them in all fitments, but you could probably get them custom made at least... Quote Link to comment
hang_510
cant remeber but i think i have all 194's in the wagon. ive seen the same base available w/ LED's i can see all the lit gauges at dusk. but thats prolly cuz i cleaned all the contacts and dust off :D Quote Link to comment
dat521gatherer
the sylvania bulbs at the store dont list the wattage or candle power. wtf!! i have 3 different owners manuals for the 521. i wonder how many there are? i know i'm missing atleast one. blue manual from 4-20-70 doesn't list bulb specs orange manual from 11-25-70 says 158 2 candela for meters, turn signals,oil/ign all cluster green manual from 6-1-71 says the same as above. funny how the earlier blue manual doesnt have a bulb chart. the bulb chart does have errors though. the 1034 dual filiments listed for- 1034 back up/reverse, should be single filiment 1034 brakes 1034 tailights 1034 turn signal rear, should be single filiment 1034 turn signal/parkingl front license plate is listed as bulb 89 6 candela room/dome is listed as 6 watts no bulb number side markers are listed as bulb 67 4 candela no engine compartment listed but i assume its the same as the dome light. pope_face
My truck currently has: mismatched headlights, "custom aftermarket" tail lights, front side marker lights half painted over, and no rear marker, dome, or engine lights... I didn't even know the 521 had an engine light... But, if you're not too antsy about using non-stock parts on your truck, you can get those neon computer dress-up lights... IIRC, they're 12 volt VDC and a lot brighter than any normal bulbs you could find... plus, they're only about $10 and you can get them in white (or numerous other colours)... Quote Link to comment
