five1oh
So I am pretty caught up to how the car stands now. There is still a bunch of metal work to do: Finish the trunk Drivers side rocker Door catch (A pillar) area (both sides) IMG_12j88 by five1oh2010, on Flickr Once that is done MOST of the structural repair is done and then it is finishing up all the welds and filling some holes on the C pillar and the rain gutter above the dash (wiper area). In addition Hood and doors need rust repair then bodywork can begin. Still a long way to go unfortunately but SUPER HAPPY with the work being done. My next posts will be some of the parts and things I have been getting over the past two years Quote Link to comment
Draker
So do you employ Eric full time with all your builds or what? Seems like you've kept him pretty busy! And yeah, looks like he does amazing work! Quote Link to comment
five1oh
So earlier in the build thread I mentioned that I ordered a set of wheels from JDM Legends and a brake setup from Whitehead performance. Well while doing the research on the wheels/offset I wanted to run I settled on a 15x9.5 front and 15x10.5 rear with some crazy offsets. Since I would be running flares front and rear I had the offsets and widths planned perfectly. Unfortunately for me the brake setup I was going with was so massive that I was too scared the 15" wheels wouldn't fit. And spending $3k on wheels I couldn't risk it so I went with 16's. The only downside is the widest 16" wheel is 9.5 inches so I ended up getting 9's for the front and 9.5 for the rear. Well after about 4-5 months the wheels showed up: IMG_5808 by five1oh2010, on Flickr IMG_5809 by five1oh2010, on Flickr IMG_5810 by five1oh2010, on Flickr IMG_5811 by five1oh2010, on Flickr IMG_5812 by five1oh2010, on Flickr IMG_5813 by five1oh2010, on Flickr IMG_5817 by five1oh2010, on Flickr IMG_5818 by five1oh2010, on Flickr IMG_5819 by five1oh2010, on Flickr IMG_5824 by five1oh2010, on Flickr IMG_5825 by five1oh2010, on Flickr IMG_5826 by five1oh2010, on Flickr IMG_5827 by five1oh2010, on Flickr IMG_5828 by five1oh2010, on Flickr Quote Link to comment
five1oh
My brake setup took almost as long to arrive as well. Since the brackets are custom made I had to wait for Whitehead performance to make them, order the Wilwood kit, and then assemble prior to shipping them to me. After they arrived I had them powdercoated red along with my sway bars and front strut brace as well the intake horns for my triple mikuni 44 setup: IMG_5606 by five1oh2010, on Flickr IMG_5607 by five1oh2010, on Flickr IMG_5829 by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr 1 Quote Link to comment
five1oh
The VERY FIRST things I ordered for my Skyline about a week after I bought the car was an authentic front GTR grill and headlight surrounds as well as authentic metal rear tail light frame surrounds. I am SUPER happy I chose to do that in 2015 because GTR grills are impossible to find now and 3x the cost that I picked them up for. In addition repops of the taillights have been made and are cheap plastic. The parts I got were genuine Nissan in AWESOME shape and nice and heavy  :frantics: IMG_2468 by five1oh2010, on Flickr IMG_2469 by five1oh2010, on Flickr IMG_0797 by five1oh2010, on Flickr IMG_4215 by five1oh2010, on Flickr IMG_5568 by five1oh2010, on Flickr IMG_4922 by five1oh2010, on Flickr In addition to those hard to find parts I got all NEW badges and a bunch of other stuff to make the restoration complete: IMG_1166 by five1oh2010, on Flickr IMG_1168 by five1oh2010, on Flickr IMG_1167 by five1oh2010, on Flickr IMG_2284 by five1oh2010, on Flickr IMG_2286 by five1oh2010, on Flickr Quote Link to comment
five1oh
So this car is my FAVORITE skyline and mine will be similar with some of the parts. Because I can only afford ONE (hakosuka) dream car I decided I would get all the parts to switch up my style. I LOVE the factory chrome trim on the car and also LOVE the look of a trunk with no spoiler. I also love the contrast of white and carbon fiber (as you could tell from my 510) so this car will have the following parts: - factory GTR (clone/tribute) badges - Carbon fiber flares (the only flares I have) - Two metal trunks (one without spoiler, one with) - White painted spoiler, carbon fiber spoiler - carbon fiber racing C pillar vents - carbon bumpers - chrome bumpers - only ONE front chin spoiler (painted) IMG_2399 by five1oh2010, on Flickr IMG_2401 by five1oh2010, on Flickr IMG_2402 by five1oh2010, on Flickr IMG_2403 by five1oh2010, on Flickr IMG_2289 by five1oh2010, on Flickr IMG_0g287 by five1oh2010, on Flickr IMG_0g288 by five1oh2010, on Flickr IMG_0284 by five1oh2010, on Flickr IMG_0285 by five1oh2010, on Flickr IMG_0286 by five1oh2010, on Flickr 1 Quote Link to comment

five1oh
*FIFY LOLOLOLOLOL. I have already been out a while ago........................I am at the point of selling parts to continue the build. I have no clue how I will buy paint at this point or build the motor lol. I have almost all the major pieces so just need to take it a day at a time. Right now the focus is to get the 510 on the ground running in the next few weeks so the Fairlady Z can join it back in the garage. Then it will be saving $ to be able to finish the Skyline later this year hopefully.....one day 1 Quote Link to comment
five1oh
So the motor that my Skyline came with was an L20A just like the Fairlady Z. It was mated to a 5 speed transmission as well (not sure which one). I knew that I wanted my car to have the power to match the looks. While it is not fair to compare HP figures from a SOHC to a stock GTR S20 DOHC because they are two completely different sounding and running motors; I had the goal of about 300 HP while trying to be on a budget. While I know the budget will likely get blown out of the water I began collecting parts in 2015 for the eventual heart transplant. First order of business was to source a diesel crank for the 3.1 Liter stroker goal. I bought this off YAJ for only $800...........seems like a steal these days so again I am SUPER HAPPY I scored it in late 2015... Enter the heart of the beast: IMG_4881 by five1oh2010, on Flickr IMG_4882 by five1oh2010, on Flickr IMG_4884 by five1oh2010, on Flickr IMG_4885 by five1oh2010, on Flickr Quote Link to comment
five1oh
So if you couldn't tell already my favorite color is white and so the skyline will be the factory Ivory color (yellowish white) with either ALL factory chrome trim with carbon flares; OR with carbon flares and some other carbon bits. The theme colors are white and black with a touch of red. I LOVE the way the red pops and it goes well with white and black. In addition RED was the color used in the badging for the GTR of which this car will be a tribute to. With that said the next pieces to source for the motor were a Red wrinkle coated valve cover and my dream SK Sanyo Intake manifold:  my apologies as this first photo was stolen from Google since I couldn't locate a good picture of my actual valve cover (I will replace it once I take one tonight). 001 by five1oh2010, on Flickr IMG_2544 by five1oh2010, on Flickr IMG_2634 by five1oh2010, on Flickr IMG_2635 by five1oh2010, on Flickr IMG_2636 by five1oh2010, on Flickr Quote Link to comment
five1oh
Along with the diesel crank, valve cover, intake manifold, and triple Mikuni 44's!!!! which I don't currently have a pic but got them with a manifold and horns for $1k!!!; I needed to find a motor to put them with. I found a steal of a deal for a complete N42/N42 motor along with ANOTHER N42 head for only $300 in San Jose in 2016 so I bought it and took it up to Eric. I gave Eric one of the heads and also got some 240z rods from him. So now I have MOST of the major pieces of the puzzle but still need to do machine work and assembly but for now the focus is body/paint. Some other cool details were the following clear lenses I scored for the side markers on the hako. For those that don't know the FACTORY front turn signals are clear leaving the ONLY yellow lenses on the car being on the fenders. Since my car is white I LOVE the clean look of clear lenses and for a part that is so small it actually took me 6 months of searching to finally locate a set. These are custom made so you have to know what to search for and wait for the seller to post them on YAJ: IMG_0920 by five1oh2010, on Flickr In addition some of the things I have wanted for the interior is vintage speakers and these KARO red/black floor mats: IMG_0685 by five1oh2010, on Flickr IMG_0686 by five1oh2010, on Flickr IMG_0687 by five1oh2010, on Flickr IMG_0688 by five1oh2010, on Flickr IMG_0689 by five1oh2010, on Flickr Quote Link to comment
five1oh
So as mentioned previously in the thread my desire was to have TWO trunks for the Skyline so that I could run with or without a spoiler and not have holes...because of this when I bought the car I also bought a second metal trunk. While the car arrived in October of 2015 my parts order through the importer did not make it until January of 2016. In addition when the parts order arrived my trunk wasn't there.......it took a couple more months for the importer to locate it and finally get it to me. While Eric was stripping the car it became apparent that the trunk that was on the car was not savable just like the rest of the rear end  Because of this I was back to only ONE trunk. Because the parts for metal panels have gotten so crazy I was not able to afford to pick up another metal trunk ($1k - 1500 for used, about 2,500 for new when you could find one). Since I was running a spoiler I settled with buying a carbon fiber trunk for only $500. While not ideal it would have to do: Original Trunk with spoiler pics: IMG_4835 by five1oh2010, on Flickr IMG_4836 by five1oh2010, on Flickr IMG_2287 by five1oh2010, on Flickr IMG_2288 by five1oh2010, on Flickr IMG_3109 by five1oh2010, on Flickr IMG_3110 by five1oh2010, on Flickr My SECOND, now ONLY metal trunk arrived from Japan YAY! IMG_5571 by five1oh2010, on Flickr IMG_5572 by five1oh2010, on Flickr IMG_5575 by five1oh2010, on Flickr What was EXTREMELY cool was that last year in discussions with a fellow Hako owner in LA (Eric with "big red") he mentioned he was selling the trunk off his red car. It was funny because at the time I was following a NOS rear trunk on YAJ and could tell he scooped it up. Needless to say he hooked it up for me on his used trunk for the price I paid for the carbon one. If things couldn't get any better I was able to sell my carbon trunk for what I paid. I now had TWO metal trunks!! I met Eric in LA while down there for JCCS in 2017 and he gave me a ride!!! SO awesome only my THIRD time EVER in a moving Hako (1 was driving mine 8 miles, 2 was a brief ride with kgc10, 3 was the ride with Eric) Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Untitled by five1oh2010, on Flickr Quote Link to comment
five1oh
Over the years browsing hako related things and searching YAJ I learned of the Watanabe Falcon steering wheel. From what I learned they are super rare and very expensive but was a great aftermarket period correct mod that I had to have for my car. In addition if you are able to source a horn button than they have white and red in the logo which plays on my white/black/red theme for the car. As with everything I do for my cars I always have a vision and personal touches that fit my style so as with buying a crap car I did the same on the wheel. I knew I wanted to recover the wheel in alcantara. The horn button came after the wheel. Apparently the style horn button I found is WAY more rare than the steering wheel. five1oh
As with most of my posts this post I am VERY passionate about. I teased some pics of my FAVORITE skyline earlier in the thread and it was that car and others that started my obsession with the ULTIMATE fender mirrors. I learned that the mirrors I was seeing on the baddest Hako's were period correct aftermarket Napoleon Bacca (or buccal) mirrors. I searched for a while using my google translate which I have gotten VERY good at and was able to locate some for sale on YAJ. They are rare but come up every now and again but are very pricey....... I ordered the following set KNOWING I wanted to figure out a way to get them carbon wrapped to match my fender flares. Below are some pictures of the differences from stock. They sit super low and flush with the body and make the car appear much more menacing. The presence is AMAZING! In fact once I was done getting them covered (I kept the project secret) I received the best compliment from Jose on IG ("For the WIN"). In fact Jose loved them so much he had his buddies in the UAE (Carbon Signal) create some for him........... To get them done for my car I reached out to Carbon Fiber Element on the East Coast. Took apart the metal bases and sent them out. Unfortunately he was nervous to wrap them and said the glass needed to come out so he shipped them back. Using my Japanese searching skills on Google I was able to find a thread from Japan that showed some damaged mirrors fully apart so I was able to figure out how to get them apart. Unfortunately I supplied too much heat and warped one of my casings NOOOOOOOOO $$$$$$ Oh well that is what I get for being the guinea pig. I had to find another one to finally fulfill my fantasy. Such an amazing piece that will make my car stand out from the rest. May be minor to some but to me it means everything. five1oh
So as with all of my threads I use the plate name in the title. For this car I was trying to find the perfect personalized plate. Unfortunately the ultimate plate was taken for the word hakosuka (roughly translated boxy skyline). The word HAKOSKA was taken which is the correct pronunciation. When I first learned of the word I always thought it was pronounced Hah-Koh-Soo-Kah but it turns out it is pronounced Ha-koo-ska. Needless to say I went with "HKOSUKA". I ordered the plate about a month after I bought the car and got the notice it was ready to pick up a few weeks before the car arrived from Japan. The COOL thing about it was after I got the VIN Verification done and all of my paperwork ready, I could immediately add the plate to the registration meaning it is on the title! YAY! One other thing I did NOT know at the time was my car was imported just before CA started clamping down on the law for post 1968 direct imports needing to pass smog. The general rule for CA smog is pre-1975 vehicles are smog exempt except for new imports.... Either way I went to the DMV, paid a TON of tax, and received my registration and plates same day! Pic of when I secured the plate: IMG_3447 by five1oh2010, on Flickr And PIC of when i got my plate and registration WOOHOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! five1oh
So before I ever had the hardware for SHAKOTN plated I decided I wanted to go all out on this Skyline build. This car was actually the first car that I had Zinc plating done for all of the hardware. Because this was the first time doing it for a car I had NO previous knowledge of I actually measured every screw, nut, bolt, washer, etc. on pieces of paper so that when I got them back I could sort them back into their labeled bags.....such a huge task but worth it as the resorting went very smoothly. five1oh
Some other things I started doing while waiting for the metal and bodywork was taking parts from Eric's house to restore them so that once the car is finished assembly will be easier since most everything will be refreshed or new prior to installing back on the car. The first thing I took was the center console. As you can see from the before pic it was in ok shape but it was missing some stuff near the front and was kind of hacked where the aftermarket radio was. While I WAS keeping the power windows AND the factory rear window defrost and OPTIONAL fog light switch I knew I wanted the GTR cubby and the missing upper piece. I won't be running the optional foglight though so I will probably repurpose the switch for an electric fan. I was able to locate an authentic GTR secondary glovebox (cubby) that had a working door but the box behind it was blown out (still need to repair). Additionally I found the correct upper trim piece for storage and the proper wood covering. To finish things off I sourced a replica RED GTR (2000GT) badge to go in its proper place (GTX was gold 2000GT). I also got a new shift boot and trim ring.
