BPattison
My 1985 Nissan D720 4WD pickup starts but doesnt turn off. I can turn the ignition to the off position and even undo the battery and it still stays started, any help on what could cause this and where to start on the diagnosis would be appreciated. datzenmike
Welcome to Ratsun Bill? Bob? With the ignition turned off do the wipers and heater fan still turn on??? Quote Link to comment
BPattison
They dont turn on. Quote Link to comment
BPattison
BTW its Blakely, lol, thanks for having me! Quote Link to comment
BPattison
I thought it might be a bad ignition cylinder Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Then hi Blake. I thought it might be a bad ignition cylinder Me too but one more... Ignition off engine running. Do the gauges still read? Turn signals still work? Quote Link to comment
BPattison
with the ignition off and the engine still running the turn signals work and the gauges still read, the btry light is lit up Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Good. Then the ignition is NOT off even though the key says it is. Sorry about the wipers and heater... they are on both the ignition ON and the ACCESSORY. Obviously the ACC does shut off. I would say that the ignition switch is not right. Unplugging it (under the steering wheel) should shut the engine off. Quote Link to comment
Lockleaf
Did you purchase the truck with this problem or have you had the truck for aa while and this is a new development? Quote Link to comment
BPattison
this is a new development, the truck has been in my family since 85. I have disconnected it from the ignition and it doesnt turn it off. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Ha ha ha well that's impossible. The first 5 fuses on the left side of the fuse box are powered only by the ignition switch. Oh boy... Do you have a test lamp? It's a short length of wire with an alligator clip on one end and a bulb and probe on the other. On the harness side of the ignition plug find the thick White/Blue stripe wire. It probably has power but it should not. Quote Link to comment
BPattison
So if it has power would that mean that the ignition cylinder is bad Quote Link to comment
BPattison
could there be bad relay, does the starter have anything to do with it or am i basically looking at the ignition lock cylinder as the issue. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Power is supplied like this... Battery.... fusible link.... ignition switch..... fuse box for things turned on and off with the ignition (first 5 (or so) fuses) 2nd ignition coil, fuel cut solenoid, r window defog, gauges, turns, back up lamps. fuel pump relay There should be no power to these with the ignition OFF but apparently there is on yours. Every thing points to the ignition switch. You did unplug the ignition switch for sure and nothing else???? Quote Link to comment
BPattison
yeah i did, will i need the whole ignition or is it the ignition lock cylinder Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
this is a new development, the truck has been in my family since 85. I have disconnected it from the ignition and it doesnt turn it off. You said here that you disconnected it and it didn't shut off. Confused. If it had shut off I would say the ignition switch is at fault. If it doesn't shut off then it's getting power from some place else. Quote Link to comment
BPattison
I can undo the switch while it is running, take out fuses, it doesnt shut off. I turn the key all the way in the off position and undo the wires and it still stays on Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Be absolutely sure you are unplugging the ignition switch right at the back of the switch With the switch unplugged check and see if turn signals work. Quote Link to comment
BPattison
switch unplugged the turn signals work, switch unplugged and ign off turn signals still work Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
This is so neat. (sorry) Blake, this problem just started? If so what was the last thing you fixed, adjusted or repaired on your truck. Quote Link to comment
BPattison
i totally love that im having issues because it makes the diagnosing so wonderful. lets see, i have recently done several things, i have a webber carb that i moved vacuum lines due to the fact that they werent on right, i fixed a leak on the oil sending unit, i have a different steering wheel on and a whole new turn signal switch combo that i put on, i put in a cluster for the speedometer part that wasnt working, i built a btry tie down out of metal for the btry area Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
It's frustrating but so nice when you find it and the fix. Steering wheel and turn signal switch change means you were in the steering column and very near the ignition switch and it's wires. I would unscrew the two part clam shell around the column and remove. I'm expecting a wire crossed over somehow and is connected to the White/Blue stripe wire coming from the ignition switch. Could be pinched or have a screw through it? Expect anything. Quote Link to comment
720driver97
Had my engine over heat and I couldn't kill it for any thing pulled battery and all had to put my hand over the carb to kill it Quote Link to comment
BPattison
Thats how I am currently killing it, thank god its not my daily driver. I have a weber carb so that makes it easy. I appreciate all the help, I will continue to keep you all informed on the diagnosis. Quote Link to comment
84720FourWheel
Stall it by letting out the clutch in like 3rd or 4th with your foot on the brake. That's what I did when I was having issues with dieseling. Unless it's auto, then continue doing what you're doing. Quote Link to comment
