ericsb210
Currently I own:1; 1980 720KC L20B/5spd (desmogged, early l16 exhuast n downpipe). This was totalled (at least the bed was), I am now running a makeshift flatbed on it. This truck runs excellent, an easy daily driver.2; 1976 620KC Auto I just picked up, decent body starts n sounds good but a PO put an l16 in it. (It is supposedly rebuilt). I am in the midst of redoing the complete brake system so I am not able to take it out on a drive. I am going to keep the 620KC and send the 720 to the next owner, but I am torn on the engines. Will I be happy with the l16? Is it well worth the time to do an engine swap?Thoughts? Quote Link to comment
laotsu
the swap is really not difficult if you have the right equipment and I never regretted having more power available. would you put teh L16 in the 720? Can you get the same price for it with a smaller engine? Do you care? Quote Link to comment
dr.feltersnatch
Pics of 720? L16 is a good motor if you like high revs. Those little motors are a lot of fun up on the top end. The l20 will have more grunt to it and are more suited to a truck if you actually use it for truck stuff. It will take you about a day to swap them around. Quote Link to comment
bananahamuck
We put L16 in FAT510s 80 720,, performance isn't great but it gets us everywhere we wanna go.. If the L20b is running good there will be a bit of difference in how they feel going down road but someone that has never driven truck before probably wouldn't or couldn't notice. ericsb210
I will post some pics of the 720 soon. Thank you for the replies, I pretty much am throwing around the same thoughts mentioned but thank you bananahamuck for your input, if you are all satisfied with the l16 in your 720 that is good enough for me. datzenmike
The 720 is heavy and even the L20B is a stretch for it. The L16 is to the 620 what the L20B is to the 720. Quote Link to comment

datzenmike
Oh, they'll work.... but larger displacement is always better. Quote Link to comment
ericsb210
Upon further investigation, I have discovered that the L16 is a Japanese transplant. It has the tale tale twin dipsticks with a W53 head. No real biggy, but I thought it interesting. Quote Link to comment
