logan1600 Posted August 29, 2014 Report Share Posted August 29, 2014 So I just did a head gasket on my l16 and didn't really mess with much else just cleaned up parts and so on I didn't take out the cam or lifters. I just put everything back together and it starts up good and seems to run great but the oil light is on and its not spitting up oil threw the oil filler cap what could he causing this? I filled the oil filter and oil pump with oil prior to Installation. Quote Link to comment

Pull the Yellow/Black stripe oil sender wire off. Light should be off with the key turned to ON (don't start). If the oil light is ON then it's pinched and grounded somewhere. Pull the coil wire off. Remove the oil pressure sender. Have someone crank the engine with the starter. Oil should pump out the oil sender hole, so be ready with a large rag. If no oil do not run engine until fixed. If oil spurts out check the sender. Quote Link to comment

And I had to do the clutch and flywheel so I pulled the engine/trans out replaced all gaskets including timing cover gaskets I did accidentally rip off the tip of the sender wire that hooks on but replaced it I will try what mike said. datzenmike Posted August 30, 2014 Report Share Posted August 30, 2014 Disconnect the send wire and turn ignition on. The light should be off. If the end was ripped off the wire may have been pulled very hard and could have a hole in the insulation touching ground. Perhaps the new plug is grounding on the side of the sender. And I had to do the clutch and flywheel so I pulled the engine/trans out replaced all gaskets including timing cover gaskets Try removing and filling the oil pump with oil. Remove the spark plugs (so it will crank faster) and crank the motor over for 30 seconds. The oil pump is self priming but a loose gasket on the pick up tube or the oil pump will allow air in. If you tested the red warning light and can now trust it, the light should go out from the oil pressure made from cranking the engine over. Quote Link to comment
logan1600 Posted August 30, 2014 Author Report Share Posted August 30, 2014 Yes its with the engine turning with the starter I actually forgot to pull the dist car so it fired up for a second and still no oil coming thru the hole. And when wire disconnected it was off when the key was on so im sure no problem with the sender. I'm going to try putting the oil pump off my ka on and do what you suggested. Quote Link to comment

logan1600 Posted August 30, 2014 Author Report Share Posted August 30, 2014 No I never messed with the pick up tube I inspected it and there was no stuff on the screen. But I never took it off and I filled the oil pump twice and made sure it was tight and the timing was all matched up. I will try cranking it with the plugs out but I had it running with the sensor out and it didn't spit a drop of oil Quote Link to comment

datzenmike Posted August 30, 2014 Report Share Posted August 30, 2014 It might provide a huge oil leak that prevents pressure building but oil would have to flow past the sender hole to get to it. A blocked oil filter should still push past the relief valve behind it in the block... having said this there's no harm is replacing a fram, that's for sure. Any chance the pick up tube was bumped while moving the block around? 1 Quote Link to comment

datzenmike Posted August 30, 2014 Report Share Posted August 30, 2014 Possibly bent or cracked? The pump won't be able to suck up the oil, like a hole in a drinking straw. You can unbolt the crossmember between the torsion bars under the pan and remove it. Unbolt the idler arm and let drop down slightly out of the way. The oil pan can now likely be dropped so you can see the tube. If cracked or bent up above the oil line you'll be able to see it. Quote Link to comment
