vishalnaidu99
Hey Guys, I have a 1980 Datsun 120Y (B310) and I want to put a SR20DET Engine in it. Due to its power, is SR20DET in B310 will be a overkill? Overkill in terms of its power destroying the chassis ( twist / bend / break )...?And this engine is known for its weight ( almost double the weight of an A series ). How can this mess up your daily driving in terms of cornering and braking.Weight distribution of the car will be affected alot. Will a 2 X heavier front cause massive understeer.Advance thanks for d feedbacks Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Absolutely overkill!!! and absolutely sooooo right!!! Hey Guys, I have a 1980 Datsun 120Y (B310) and I want to put a SR20DET Engine in it. Due to its power, is SR20DET in B310 will be a overkill? Absolutely overkill!!! and absolutely sooooo right!!! Overkill in terms of its power destroying the chassis ( twist / bend / break )...? You'll have trouble putting this power to the ground so the tires are going to slip first and act like a fuse blowing. If you had sticky drag slicks this would be different. And this engine is known for its weight ( almost double the weight of an A series ). How can this mess up your daily driving in terms of cornering and braking. Weight distribution of the car will be affected alot. Will a 2 X heavier front cause massive understeer. It will definitely alter the handling adversely compared to stock but with proper lowering, springs, dampers, tires and rear sway bar this can be somewhat corrected. Quote Link to comment
sunny310
should just go with a CA18ET Quote Link to comment
Kirden
should just go with a CA18ET I second this motion! only because it is sexier even though it is a little less powerful in stock trim. Both of these options will make the a-series feel like a tonka toy engine On a dfferent note, unless you plan on competing with the car, I don't see the weight difference damaging drivability much. Like Mike said, lowering and stiffer springs will help greatly. I would be more worried about the added power and possible damage to your rear end and getting brakes beefy enough to stop it reliabbly. People have put VG engines in these bad boys and still been able to drive them effectively and I think those weigh more than an SR with all the bells and whistles. Quote Link to comment
sunny310
People like putting big high-horsepower engines in little cars and that's all well and good... just as long as theres some kinda chassis strengthening/reinforcing so it can handle all the extra torque without the car snapping in half. And plus suspension to match as well. I've seen on youtube 1200s and little ke20 corollas with v8s handling the power just fine. Just research man..theres alotta info if u look...there a few b310 engine swap threads on here including some KA24 swaps which is kinda getting popular Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
The stock tires will be the safety valve when the power comes on. If you start to plant more and more power to the pavement you will need a stronger rear end. The '82-'83 S110 (200sx) has an H-190 and rear coils and four link. ZX struts and front brakes, 14" tires, stiffer springs and dampers and some lowering will help the handling (which is your first line of defensive driving anyway) and the brakes will do the rest.
