DATSUN671
anyone know the timing marks for the l20b? Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
Yes, its on the front of the engine. Wipe the edge of the crankshaft pulley until you find the groove. Mark it with chalk. Underhood sticker will give the timing spec for your truck. If the sticker is missing, set it to 10°. Some can take more, but it depend on which of the six emission packages it has. LenRobertson
Might be something here that will help: http://www.davidcmurphy.com/olddat/620tech2.htm On the L20b (that I'm pretty sure came out of a 620) in my 510, the plate can be seen looking behind the fan belt between the water pump and alternator. If it is greasy it will be really hard to see until you spray something on it and wipe it down. Len Quote Link to comment

DATSUN671
On the camshaft sprocket is the engrave #1 suppose to be the timing mark when the timing chain is installed? Quote Link to comment
wayno
L20b engines use the #2 mark and dowel hole, L16s use the #1 mark and dowel hole. :) Quote Link to comment
DATSUN671
Could this be why my engine feels weak sometimes? The last time I did a timing job I put it at # 1 started up but feels weak? So the chain has to be on number 2 and the number 2 hole on the cam sprocket. Thanks for the help. Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
Yes. After you change it, let us know how much difference it makes. And whether low-Rpm power picks up, or hi-rpm power picks up. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
As stated the L20B is set on the #2 at the factory. Number one would advance the cam timing shutting and opening valves sooner than needed. This is good at low RPMs but doesn't allow full cylinder filling when revved up. Try #2. Be sure to set motor at TDC and BLOCK THE CHAIN TENSIONER SO IT DOES NOT FALL OUT!!! If you don't know about this find out before removing the cam sprocket. Quote Link to comment
