White Bunny Special w/ Fidanza Flywheel

Recommended Posts

I've put together a White Bunny clutch kit w/ 280Z Fidanza Light Weight Flywheel and stock Sachs D21 clutch kit for my KA24E Wagon.

Picked up ARP flywheel bolts, and I'm now considering ARP pressure plate bolts as well. I need 9 total and what I found was a set by ARP for RB26DETT.

Called ARP and the specs for those bolts are:
Length - 16mm (guessing its length of stud, not including hex head)
Thread - 8mm
Pitch - 1.25

Anybody know the specs of either D21, 280Z, or other Nissan/Datsun 240mm clutch kits? Trying to figure out if this RB kit will work.

Thanks!

Note, I started this thread asking about the above pressure plate bolts, but figured I'd change title since more about this setup is being talked about than just pressure plate bolts.

The D-21 is a240mm clutch and PP. Isn't the 280z a 225????

Well let us know how that works out.

It almost seems that it can be used with both diameters of clutch disks. Maybe.

However, the bulk of my research for Fidanza Flywheel #143281 was focused on its use in the "White Bunny" clutch setup.

However, I'm now wondering if I should have opted for a Z32 clutch kit instead. I can't find much on the actual tq handling specs of the Sachs D21 clutch kit I bought. Just wondering what the difference is between it and the Z32.

I ordered the D21 clutch kit based off the below:

.

I'm saying the 280z flywheel is 225mm and the D-21 clutch is 240mm. Unless you meant to say 280zx turbo?

Yeah, 280zx turbo.

Fidanza website, notice application fitment criteria in the left dropdown box:

280zx Turbo: http://www.streetperformance.com/SPEEDgate/Fidanza/f_productdisplay.php?brandID=101343&VehicleID=16003&EngineConfigID=5574&sku=1404188&hdwt=31101&loc=101&dealer=no&company_id=101343

And

Kinda confirms people using same part # Fidanza FW in both 225mm and 240mm applications.

I'll be home today to mate them up, take pics, and will post up.

Home now so I tore open some packaging to match things up.

Pressure Plate-to-Flywheel bolt hole alignment. Note: only 6 or 9 line up. Had expected that from previously linked thread talking about Fidanza flywheel.

However, this is a possible issue I haven't seen mentioned anywhere. Dowel pin protrude too much so they keep pressure plate from sitting flush to flywheel, or is this how its supposed to sit?

Those dowel pins shouldn't be creating a gap like that should it? Any suggestions/solutions?

Once again sorry about larger photos. Photobucket seems to get worse at doing the basic stuff as they look to incorporate all the bells and whistles. Really starting to irk.

I think it would be flush. Datzenmike would know more. what your old FW set up look like?

I think a Daiken Stage 1 clutch kit woud have been a better set up if you have a high powered motor. Plus most likelyits made in Japan unless Daiken outsources already. But a 240 stage 1 would be a MOFO to push everyday. Might even blow out the old slave cylinder if not new

Made in Korea? Close enough? :w00t:

I haven't pulled my motor and trans yet so not sure what stock looks like.

Yeah, at this point I'm thinking I should have gone with an Exedy stock replacement for Z32 turbo. Depending on where I am with monies by the time do the freshen up of timing kit/seals/clutch I may just go ahead and go for the Exedy Z32 Turbo.

However, while I am doing a turbo KA, I don't plan to trash the car with clutch dumping/burnouts. I'm kinda concerned about messing up the drivetrain, rear end mostly. Maybe more rolling type pedal mashing.

So the supplied dowel pins won't allow for PP bolt holes to line up in any other position, which really doesn't matter as the dowel pins holes on the PP is located in such a spot that the dowel  pin "step-up" lip MUST be flush with flywheel face.

My thought is, if I were to cut off the notched out back end of the dowel pin, the dowel pin would probably sit perfectly flush (see pic).

Also regarding the dowel pins, what would be the general consensus; are they simply for alignment of PP to flywheel or for structural integrity(i.e. shear load) or both I guess.

Reason I ask is, I don't think these dowel pins in this flywheel would do neither really. They are really pretty loose in there. Gravity alone seat them in the flywheel. I personally think there is too much slop for it to be shear. The PP bolts would bend before dowels experience much of any shear load.

However, I have a email with pics in to Fidanza now to see what's up.

Fidanza flywheels are made for the 240mm clutch; and don't handle the 225mm clutch anymore. The last three that have passed through my hands were drilled for the 240mm bolt pattern only, so careful what you get...they used to be drilled for both patterns. The 250mm clutch disk and pressure plate from the newer Z-cars can also be used, but you may have to clearance your bellhousing a few mm.

The dowels should sit flush, you're right. they do not hold any shear loading, and are only for alignment. The dowel pins should only allow the clutch to fit in one position, you should NOT be able to bolt the clutch up unless it is in the correct "clocking", i.e. you turn it 120* and sit it back on the dowel pins, the bolts should NOT line up. It only fits one way.

Yes, they will work. The 280Z 2+2, 280ZX turbo, D21 hardbody, RB20/25, Z31 turbo, and 350Z all use M8x1.25 bolts with a 16mm threaded length.

The pressure plate bolt pattern on all the above clutches also match. Also, the spline count for the transmission...disk diameter with the exception of the 250MM 350Z clutch...Yes, you can put the 250MM 350Z clutch disk and pressure plate in there. 400ft-lb capacity with a pedal only slightly stiffer than stock.
