Datsun 620 Li'l Hustler Induction & Exhaust

Hello all Datsun/Nissan Folks here,

I have just joined the forum after acquiring a '78 Long bed' pickup that I've known since it was new. I've already snagged a couple of parts that I need, right outta the chute, on the forum here. I think I'm gonna really like this group. I do have a couple of questions right here at the start.

This Li'l Hustler needs a valve job and after an 'Earth Moving' procedure I have the head/intake/exhaust assembly on he bench for dissassebly. A re-grind and set of new valves is scheduled.

I've studied the forum regards; emmisions removal and gather that the trend that, if one wants to do away with EGR system (I'm in Oklahoma),  is to use a L16 intake for a clean induction area (basically keeping only the PCV valve). That's plenty good with me. What recommendations can you folks give me regards the exhaust?? Seems, from my studies of the forums, that there is not a big advantage in going to a header type exhaust. What off-the shelf Datsun exhaust manifold gives the cleanest setup (plumbing wise) and decent performance and does anyone have parts available?? If I know what the correct items I need to procure, I could post on the want-to buy forum.

Also, I'm concerned with the volumetric flow in what I put on the L20 engine. Therefore. if any recommended items need machining/porting to be an efficient addition, let me know.

I'm sure that I'll have more 'Newbie' questions.

Welcome. To start you off, nice introduction.

You CAN use an L16 intake, but keep in mine the L16 intake ports were the smallest of all intakes. It had a 1.1'' intake port. Not sure what head you have, but it should be a W53 (I think) and I'm not sure, but I know the port size is larger. Open the intake to match the head and you should be okay.

A mildly stock L20 only needs about 2'' or 2.25'' exhaust stock, and as you guessed a header is useless on our motors. The desirable exhaust manifold would be the L16 or L18 type, that were emissions free and already very free flowing. I have you if you're interested. Just PM me and we can talk about it.

The only thing you might do while the head is off is open up the intake ports as much as you can to match the gasket, and match the intake as well. Other then that there's really nothing else needed.

You could also use a Weber 32/36 or even a 38/38 for increased performance, but that will slightly decrease fuel economy.
