Steering wheel slop? Like too much side to side turning without the truck turning?

This can be a combination of loose wheel bearings, worn tie rod ball joints and worn idler arm. If you add up all the slop in these things and it was to come to a 1/4" by the time it goes through a 19:1 ratio steering box it will become almost 5 inches at the steering wheel. Sloppy steering isn't always the steering box's fault. You may have some worn or damaged steering parts too.

Raise the truck and grab the steering column above the box. Twist it while holding the pitman arm with the other. Does this feel sloppy?

There is an adjustment for gear lash on the steering box. But have a care because most wear in in the middle and the outer L and R ends are still tight. If you remove all the play in the middle the gears will be too tight further away from the middle on turns. The best way is to make an adjustment and have the wheels off the ground. Turn the wheel fast from lock to lock looking for any tight spots. Try a bit more and test it. (if you have power steering don't start the motor)

alot of my bushings are shot and the idler arm looks a bit slack.

there is alot of play in the steering wheel as well (left to right turning)

Does it have a lot of clunking sounds when turning the steering wheel?

If so, you need to start replacing worn out parts, idler arms are really bad about making noises when bad.
