Prophet1012's 1982 B310 project

Recommended Posts

You should probably take "if the price is right" out of your vocabulary.

The parts would be cheap (at least from the US), but shipping will be a killer. Now if you had some parts to trade, that would be a different story. You know what I need. Send me a PM if you want to work out a deal that suits us both...   B)

yeah I learned that alright haha

unfortunately i don't have extra parts :( i'll still send you a pm just in case i find some parts whilst searching for the the ones i want.

Today some parts from Italy arrived, very happy with the quality, the grille and black and orange plastic (i don't know what are they called haha) are in perfect condition and the radiator is in very good condition but not perfect, at least it is still OEM (not even refurbished plain and simple virgin haha). Except the radiator, which is going to be installed right not with a new thermostat and new coolant, everything else is going to be installed when the project really gets in gear.

It has very light damage (I think if i take it to a pro panel beater with the use of a rubber hammer he will sort it out and no re chroming will be required as it has factory chrome on it). happy with it, it costs 70euro (but considering new ones are 200dollars without shipping) i still think it was worth it even with light damage. tell what you think guys

I managed to find a thermostat housing this week, i had my brother install it for me ,since he is a mechanic and last time i fucked up, bought dome new high quality coolant (since Malta is a subtropic country xD) and voila heat issue solved. After some good runs i can say that now the car runs much better, it heats to optimum temperature faster and then it does not overheat (it stays right in the middle ) even when revving it somewhat hard (before it the engine would be cold for a long time then it almost overheats in winter and overheats in summer). Very satisfied with the results

All that remains on the engine is a little bit of surface rust that i will tackle when i get the engine overhauled whilst the car itself is being sand blaster and repainted xD

Hi i would really appreciate if anybody can help clear some thoughts i have.

Am i right to say that my a12 is a late model?

the distributer is in the middle

I was able to find out what is the engine only through the stamp on the block

as the engine details are not stamped on the identification plates in the engine bay

I don't know what is this...anyone knows?

The B310 was bought by my dad from the Nissan dealer in Malta, he confirmed that the cylinder head on the factory installed A12 was it was never changed infact everything in the engine bay is factory original (apart service related parts such as the filters). After looking through the wiki some question rose including:

Late cylinder heads should not have an oil boss on its side, so how come an 1982 Datsun sunny has an a12 with cylinder having an oil boss?

On the wiki (if i understood it well) late a12's cylinder head should not have an oil boss. It should have mounting boss for the fuel line so that the fuel line is attached to the cylinder head rather than on the rocker cover. Funnily enough I have both xD i.e. oil boss and mounting boss for the fuel line (which is attached to the cylinder head not the rocker cover from different points (as i will show with pictures)).

Picture showing the oi and mounting bosses

another mount holding the fuel line (although is held together with water jacket

another similar mounting (but connected to the intake manifold's mount rather than the water jacket

Although I have not removed the rocker cover (as I don't have another one in case i damage it during the removal of the rocker cover) i am fairly sure that the cylinder had is a round port H81. According to the wiki they should be Swedish spec late a12.

A picture with highlighted H81 stamp on the intake manifold:

As you can see they have the original bolt pattern

This raises another question i.e. which intake gasket should I buy?

as the intake gasket for sale on ebay and such (as well as the one i had bought) have the "new" bolt pattern as as such they are not compatible for my cylinder head even though their label is for 1980-1982 b310's a12

The ones that i think are compatible are from early a10 and a12 which does not make sense since the cylinder head was factory attached to an a12 attached to an 1982 sunny.

Today i removed the rocker cover and i have found a stamp m30 and 052. And also confirmed that is it an original bolt pattern round intake cylinder head. For some time i was hearing an abnormal engine sound, my brother who is a mechanic told me that there may be a problem with the rockers clearance, when today we removed the rocker cover we found that they were over the clearance allowed. Furtunately there was no damge and he arranged the clearance to the optimum level i.e. 3.5mm. Now that engine sound is gone :D

yesterday while inspecting the spark plug on the a 12 i found out that 3 were really clean and 1 was really black and sooty, my brother told me to switch the position of the dirty one with a clean one to determine if it is a sparkplug problem or an engine related problem, he told me that if it is an engine related problem 99% it is the piston ring of the forth chamber may be damaged as he fixed many a12 when they were common in Malta. Today I searched on ebay I found these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/380592615536?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649

do you guys think they are compatible with an A12

today i am really happy as i managed to win a JDM diamond Grille :D this on in particular http://page5.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/e142468261#enlargeimg.

I think it is in pristine condition considering the only small damage is the drilling this guy has done (i will sand it with a fine grit or a fine and fill it up carefully with plastic filler. The only real problem is that it does not have a JDM badge included. I hope the standard "D" emblem fits or else i have to get creative as the "S" type emblem are not cheap
