oliboo
Hey Ratsun! i'm lost here... i have a white needle tach that i'm trying to wire up but i seem to be missing the looped white wire that goes in series with the coil's negative lead. can anyone tell me the fix for this? i really don't wanna resort to an aftermarket tach. i'd like to keep it "stock". thanks! qwik510
Dime Quarterly Back Issues had an article on Tach Repair and upgrade. Check it out. https://docs.google.com/folder/d/0ByCvxnHNk90SYzc4N2E1MWEtMzg0MC00YTE4LTkxZGQtM2RjODA5ODA1YjU1/edit?pli=1&docId=0ByCvxnHNk90SMDMzMmRmZWYtOTRjZC00NGQ0LTg2NWQtOTcyNDk3MDJiZjFj Quote Link to comment
oliboo
thank you! i will look into it. i did more research about induction loops and. it seems pretty easy to do. i will keep you guys posted once i mess with it. Quote Link to comment
rpowell25
Sorry, don't have much info for you but I have a pic of the loop: Quote Link to comment
oliboo
thanks rpowell. i made a loop today and the tach works now BUT it's reading too high. some say i need to install a 1K resistor in series with the coil wire. tried it but no joy... continuing on with the research... qwik510
If you look on the back of the tach, there is a small hole that will accept a slotted screwdriver that will allow you to adjust the tach. Quote Link to comment
oliboo
could it be because i'm running a vg swap in my 510 hence the erratic rpm reading on my tach? Quote Link to comment
datsunaholic
Well, the tach is designed to read 2 pulses per revolution because it's a 4-cylinder tach. A VG, being a 6-cyl, has 3 pulses per revolution. So the tach will read 50% too high. You can adjust it, but that far? I don't know. Wiring a resistor does nothing, or at worst makes it read nothing or make it extremely erratic due to weak signal.. The tach is inductive and reads pulses. Voltage/current is irrelevant to the tach signal wire. You'd need a logic counter that reads 3 pulses and turns them into 2. Quote Link to comment
qwik510
It will not work with the 6 cylinder. You can get a tach from a Z or ZX and take it apart and retrofit it into the 510 tach housing. Read that article I shared in the post above and it will show you what to do. Quote Link to comment
oliboo
yup you guys are all correct. thank you so much for the help. i will be getting a z tach and go from there. again, thanks much! Quote Link to comment
