My new two door

Allow myself to introduce...myself.

I recently got my first Datsun, a two door auto.

I've been into Datsuns/Nissans for virtually all of my driving career.  I first got into them when my parents (unannounced) brought home a new-off-the-lot 97 A32 that I learned to drive stick on.  She's now my daily.  I also had an SR'd s13 hatch from '02 until '10, it was my ex-gf's from 98 onward, but she hated stick so I drove it more than her.  She took the dog, I got the car for $1 in consolation.  I let it go in a moment of weakness for too little.  But she's dead and buried.

I'm in the process of learning as much as I can about 510's, as there isn't a plethora of ready-to-bolt-on type of stuff as there is with the S-chassis.  It's kinda hard starting over in the knowledge department, but learning is fun and I like a challenge.

I've already acquired front TTT coils, a NOS rear bumper overrider (the bar thing that bolts onto your bumper, although I don't think I'll use it) and an uncut Datsun center console.  Unfortunately, I forgot to take pics of it, I'll add them later.

Onto the car:

1971 two door, manufactured in 11/70.  68K reads on the clock, I have no idea how many times it rolled over.  Auto, obviously.  It was an a/c car, although that likely died long ago.

Goods: I have nearly every piece of trim and it looks complete - the only thing I seem to be missing is the rear interior decklid, but I figure I'll make one.  It was taken care of, no accidents that I can tell.  It's got a tach.

Bads: Rust.  I expected that though.  Driver's fender has rot going into the rocker, passenger rocker panel just behind the front fender is cancerous as hell.  The passenger rear quarter has cancer near the trunk (?).  Headgasket is going, but I'm pulling the motor to do body and paint anyway.  It runs ok otherwise.  Speedo is a little jumpy.  The interior was reupholstered at some point - I think 1980's.  The mirrors - I hate them.  Tints - not to hate, I don't think it's appropriate for old cars

My goals/plans: not really sure at this point.  I want to tear it down and handle body/paint first, so I figure I have some time to sort it out.  I had an SR car for 8 years, so I know the motor pretty well - better than a KA actually.  But an SR is more work - I suppose I will wait and see how much I blow on body and paint.  I'm pretty sure I want FI over Carb'd though.  But I won't up horsepower until I improve handling and stopping, so I have to decide what I'll do about those.  Of course, Wilwood looks good, and I've already got half a suspension TTT setup.  But I'll be bogged down in body/paint for a while.

Here she is:

lol get used to it  and remove the word "kit" from your vocabulary while your at it too.

cuz there isnt ready to rock kits for every little thing.

gotta actually build things when you own a datto  but luckily most of it is well documented already.

car looks to be in good shape that. that rust is pretty minimal.

Yeah, I figured it out pretty quick that fab/improvisation are part of the game.  But I think that's also part of the appeal, as there will be no cookie cutter cars as there are with other chassis.  I'm good at wrenching, but welding notsomuch.  The good thing is my friend's father restores cars, so he has the know how and stuff required for that sort of thing.  Working on the 240 got my feet wet, now I have an opportunity to actually LEARN things.

I was excited to finally be able to drive a car into Jimmy's Old Car Picnic in Golden Gate Park - but I was the ONLY 510 this year!  Plenty of roadsters and a cherry 411, but I was the solo 510.

I'm excited to get started.  I fell into this car, as I wasn't really looking (although I've always wanted one), and just did a random CL search.  Apparently my "my name is, my number is, I have cash" message was the difference maker.

The cool thing is all the people who come out of the woodwork about my car.  Not just the strangers on the street, but people like my cousin - whom I've known my entire life - with a red 4 speed that's on blocks in his garage!  I had no idea.  LOL, his wife keeps telling me to take it...

So, I pulled the lower trim and it revealed this cancer:

Here's the console. I have the armrest foam, but it needs a new cover.

I have a question. This bar seems janky to me.  This can't be how the seatbelt is supposed to be, is it?

I'm not really sure what I'm going to do at this point.  Rather than simply up the horsepower, I'm handling body and paint issues first.  I hope to go with a more modern, preferably Nissan, motor.  But before that, brakes and handling first.  If I go faster, I'll have to stop and turn faster.  The house is being remodeled, so the garage is full o' stuff.  Once construction is complete, I'll start the tear down.

The libres came with the car.  I think they're knockoffs, they don't have the spine in the back.  And they won't clear bigger brakes
