project620
i have read that that is one of the first things that give out and if left unrepair it could damage the head. i havent engine swapped my truck yet but should i replace the tensioner while it is out or just put it in like that???? Quote Link to comment
nismopu
its not the tensioner itself but mostly the plastic guides that break and cause excessive slack. In some cases I have seen the tensioner bolt itself come loose and cause the chain to skip. So, just remove the valve cover and see if the plastic guide is still there, it it isn't then replace the whole timing set. peace. Quote Link to comment
kiznook
its not so much the tensioner as it is the guide rails. Your best bet is to get a timing kit, this way you can replace it all (gears, chain tensioner, guides) Quote Link to comment

datzenmike
What's up with Nissan switching to a crappy single chain when they got years of good service from the old tried and true double??? Cheapness I guess. Did you know Henry Ford went around to wrecking yards? He would ask the owners what parts they didn't sell because they never wore out and nobody needed a replacement. He found that the king pins were over engineered and rarely broke or wore out....... so he went back to his engineers and had them made thinner and smaller. If you think about it, this makes sense. It saves money on materials and in theory all the parts should wear out at the same time on a car. Well it should if you're in the business of making and selling new ones. Quote Link to comment
